Warning: contains spoilers for X-Men #9Marvel Comics has been teasing the mysterious “Inmate X” identity for months now, with most fans assuming that the mutant prisoner would be none other than former X-Men leader Charles Xavier. However, X-Men #9 has finally revealed that Inmate X is not Xavier, launching a whole new set of fan theories on whom it could be, with this bewildering mutant most likely playing a major role in an upcoming X-Men story.
The mystery of Inmate X was deepened when, in X-Men #9, Xavier used his powers to control Psylocke, manipulating her and Nightcrawler into freeing him from Graymalkin Prison, after which he reveals that he is in fact not Inmate X.
X-Men #9, from writer Jed MacKay and artist Federico Vicentini, sees Juggernaut readying himself to break out Inmate X from Graymalkin – a mutant prison run by Dr. Corina Ellis with the help of the powerful psychic Scurvy – when Xavier appears, telling Cain that he is already free. The question remains though: Who is Inmate X and why are they so important?

Most Fan Assumed Inmate X Would Be Charles Xavier
If not Xavier, then who could the mysterious prisoner be?
It was a fair assumption for X-Men fans to theorize that Inmate X would be Charles Xavier, not only because Marvel itself teased him as the main prisoner of Graymalkin Prison, but also because Xavier had done things worthy of imprisonment. Although it has since been revealed to the readers that Xavier did not murder all the humans on Space Force Frigate Agnew, the X-Men and the general public do not know this and still consider him the “Butcher of Krakoa.” While Xavier has accepted his imprisonment for some time, in a bid to keep mutantkind safe, he has now decided to break free from Graymalkin Prison, starring in a new crossover series called X-Manhunt.

Why Professor X Is Now Considered a Villain in X-Men Lore
Charles Xavier is a complex, tragic figure, constantly trying to protect his mutant “children” while becoming a villain due to his moral failings.
The question of who Inmate X is remains a mystery, but there are some contenders that fans are already theorizing about, namely: Legion, Nate Grey, Vulcan, and Rasputin IV. In particular, Rasputin and Legion may be likely choices because they are both incredibly powerful, are fan favorite X-Men, and haven’t been seen since the end of the Fall of X. Another popular theory is that Inmate X will be the Omega-level Nate Grey who hasn’t been seen since Age of X-Man. However, Corina Ellis talks to Inmate X about the fall of Krakoa, and Nate was never on the island, which might preclude him. Finally, the third Summers brother, Vulcan, has not been seen since Apocalypse used him in the Genesis War, and is one of the most powerful and dangerous mutants in history.
Inmate X Will Play A Major Role In The X-Men’s Future
The mystery mutant may decide the fate of mutantkind…
Dr. Corina Ellis can contain Inmate X for now, but it is more than likely that in the coming months, her prisoner will find a way to escape… Of course, there are other options for who Inmate X could be, including a new mutant that has never been seen before. Regardless of whom is revealed to be the mysterious Inmate X, their existence and eventual freedom may pave the path forward for all mutantkind. Will this mutant be an ally to the X-Men, or will they be a violent monster, making humanity hate and fear mutantkind more than ever?
Hopefully, whoever is revealed to be Inmate X will be an ally to the X-Men and can help them fight their common enemies, like Dr. Corina Ellis, 3K, and other threats to mutant safety on Earth. Either way, Inmate X’s reveal is sure to make a huge splash in the world of mutants.
