The following contains major spoilers for What If… Venom #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One of the most important gods in the Marvel Universe has been killed. Now, Moon Knight stands alone in his fight against What If‘s Venom.

What If… Venom #4 opens to find Moon Knight trapped within a dark sarcophagus, unable to remember whether he put himself there or not. Even after stepping out into the rest of the Midnight Mission, Moon Knight struggles to remember recent events, making him wonder if maybe all of this is a dream. Unfortunately, this is indeed his waking life, one twisted by not just the Venom symbiote, but by the Trickster God Loki, who has become the symbiote’s latest host. Worse still, the villain wastes no time in severing Khonshu’s head and leaving Moon Knight to fend for himself without the help of his patron god.

The God of the Moon known as Khonshu made his Marvel Comics debut alongside the titular hero of 1980’s Moon Knight #1 by writer Doug Moench and artist Bill Sienkiewicz. Thanks to the convoluted nature of the various pantheons of the Marvel Universe, not to mention Khonshu’s impossibly old age, his origins are unclear. In some accounts, Khonshu is the son of Ammon Ra and Amaunet, whereas others refer to Khonshu as the adopted son of the former with only vague ideas surrounding the nature of that relationship.

For thousands of years, Khonshu has chosen a mortal avatar, or Fist of Khonshu, by bequeathing his powers onto them and christening them as the Moon Knight. The first of these, an unnamed caveman and one of Khonshu’s earliest devotees, fought alongside the Stone Age Avengers against a variety of threats. The most prominent battle that this ancient Moon Knight was a part of was against Mephisto and his multiple armies, the Council of Red and the Multiversal Masters of Evil.
