Madame Web reportedly experienced some major changes during its creation, suggesting a very different version of the movie came close to happening.

New Marvel concept art for the Madame Web movie reveals erased ideas that almost came to life in Dakota Johnson’s film. While hopes had risen that Madame Web would circumvent Morbius‘ effect on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Johnson’s entry into the comic book movie genre went in a very different direction. Not only did Madame Web struggle financially, but its critical reception resulted in the film being called one of the worst superhero movies of all time.

It has nearly been a month since the Madame Web movie was released in theaters before becoming one of the biggest box office bombs of 2024. However, it appears Madame Web could have turned out very differently as Ed Natividad (via Reddit) shared concept art for early versions of the film, including an aged-up version of Johnson’s titular heroine, Cassie Webb.

While Madame Web featured multiple Spider-Women, it appears that another heroine almost made it into the film. In the Madame Web concept art gallery, Charlotte Witter is also seen in a more modernized version of her Spider-Woman costume from the comics, although it is unclear which actress the artwork is supposed to be based on, as there was no reported casting ever made for her.

Madame Web Movie Cast & Marvel Character Guide

Madame Web, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, features a star-studded ensemble cast filled with famous actors in surprising Marvel roles.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a Madame Web 2 movie is not happening, given the flopping result of Madame Web. However, the timeline that led to Madame Web and its controversial final reception is tumultuous, especially since the movie was announced all the way back in 2019. Based on numerous interviews with the Madame Web cast, studio interference appears to be one of the biggest obstacles that factored into the film’s final product.

From a lackluster villain to underdeveloped leading characters, Madame Web didn’t leave much to be desired, especially as the superhero landscape has been struggling in the last two years. How Sony plans to move forward with this franchise after Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3 remains to be seen for now, though it’s likely the franchise will seek to move away from Madame Web’s reception going forward.

Madame Web

Madame Web is a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Taking place in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the movie revolves around a clairvoyant woman who can look into different dimensions. Dakota Johnson stars in the lead role, with Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor comprising the rest of the cast.

With Sony looking to develop multiple Spider-Man TV shows on MGM+ and Prime Video, moving away from the struggling film franchise and exploring the spider-heroes more in the world of television may pay dividends for the franchise as it continues. As it continues to be the subject of jokes even weeks later, it’s likely Madame Web will be holding the title of 2024’s weakest comic book movie for some time to come.
