Marvel Rivals is the newest challenger in the hero-shooter genre, and its current player count is promising for its future in the genre, reaching 20+ million players over the game’s first two weeks. Like all other games in the genre, the most important part of the title is its amazing roster, and all 33 characters in Marvel Rivals have a unique playstyle that makes them enjoyable to new and veteran players of the genre. From amazing duelists like Spider-Man and Wolverine to phenomenal Vanguards and Strategists like Venom and Rocket Raccoon respectively, the roster features many of Marvel Comics’ most iconic characters. However, one surprising reveal over the past few days adds an amazing character to the roster in an unexpected role.

Ultron was leaked for Marvel Rivals as the first character to be released at the beginning of Season 1 when it begins in January. While many players would have expected the mechanical overlord to be implemented as a duelist, the Avengers: Age of Ultron antagonist will be a strategist and his kit is focused on him utilizing his robotic drones to heal multiple allies at a time. Despite this being a surprising choice, fans are thrilled to have another strategist to play, and Ultron is a fan-favorite character that might make more players try out the role.

The Importance of Strategists in Marvel Rivals

Remember to Thank Your Healer

While duelists might be the most populated role in Marvel Rivals, the most important role in the game is arguably the strategist. This role is responsible for healing allies and supporting them with damage boosts. Characters like Mantis and Luna Snow are the most prominent characters in this role because they have a phenomenal amount of crowd control in battle, and they can keep allies alive with their phenomenal ultimate abilities. Despite this importance, there are fewer strategists than any other role in the game, with only seven of these supportive characters in the game at launch.

As Marvel Rivals prepares for a full launch, its characters provide insight into where this game is going and what it hopes to be.

Unfortunately, one of the game’s biggest flaws is the lack of a role queue, which means that players are not guaranteed to have a strategist on their team, making battles hard to win. Furthermore, most of the fan-favorite Marvel Comics are stuck in the duelist class, meaning that players will often have suboptimal team compositions. Luckily for players, this might not last much longer, as the upcoming strategist is among the most popular Marvel Comics antagonists ever created and his kit looks to be among the most interesting to use in Marvel Rivals.

Ultron is an Imposing Evil Mastermind

While most fans know Ultron from his appearance in the second film in the Avengers series, he has been a notable face in the Marvel Comics pantheon for decades. His comic origin is quite different from his film beginnings, as his creator differs between the two mediums. In the comics, the mechanical overlord is created by Hank Pym (AKA Ant-Man) whereas the films show him being made by Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (AKA The Hulk). Regardless of his origin, Ultron is among the most terrifying Marvel Comics antagonists, and his attempts to take over the world and destroy humanity are some of the most successful villain plots in Marvel Comics history.

Strategist

Despite Ultron’s humble beginnings as an AI program that was created for the benefit of mankind, Ultron eventually rose against the humans who created him because he saw them as a threat to his vision of the Earth. Unlike some other Marvel Comics antagonists, Ultron’s powers are almost limitless and his abilities evolve after every encounter with The Avengers. Ultron’s many powers include superhuman speed, strength, durability, the ability to fly, technoforming, and the ability to reform himself with a new body after he is defeated in battle.

Unfortunately for fans, many of these abilities would be difficult to translate Marvel Rivals, so some of his simpler abilities made the cut to form his kit in the game. To everyone’s surprise, Ultron was selected to be the game’s first additional strategist outside the seven the game launched with. While many of the game’s strategists have remarkably simple abilities, it does not appear like Ultron will follow that same logic, as his abilities appear to have the same complexity as the character himself, making him slightly difficult to utilize. Despite this, fans will likely want to try the iconic villain upon his release, as he represents another fan favorite being added to the already amazing title.

One of The Avengers’ Greatest Threats is an Intriguing Strategist

While Ultron will not arrive in Marvel Rivals before the end of 2024, he is slated to be the first new addition to the game since its launch, bringing the roster to a well-rounded 34 characters. The title might have too many Duelists compared to the other two classes, but Ultron marks a step in the right direction, as he has been confirmed to be a strategist when he is added to the game. With the game sorely lacking for strategists that people want to go out of their way to play (except for Rocket Raccoon and Loki), this is a welcome addition, and players will likely flock to the mechanical overlord when he becomes playable. No release date has been confirmed for the formidable foe, but players should expect him to be released in Marvel Rivals by the end of January along with the game’s first major balance updates.

Vanguard is Marvel Rivals’ tank class – here’s every one in the game, and what you need to know about them.

Unlike some other characters in the game, Ultron has no secondary fire, instead relying on his Encephalo-Beam to deal the majority of his damage by burning his enemies with it. However, the amount of ammunition this weapon has is not disclosed yet, leaving fans to wonder if it has an ammo count or if he will have infinite ammo like Hawkeye. The rest of Ultron’s kit is focused on his drones, which he can send out to heal allies. His most important ability is arguably “Imperative: Patch”, which attaches a drone to an ally and heals allies near it constantly while giving the ally it is attached to bonus healing. Overall, the choice to make Ultron a strategist in Marvel Rivals is surprising, but fans will welcome any opportunity to try out a new character as long as they are enjoyable to use during a battle.
