Actor David Harbour recently praised Thunderbolts* and its cast by labeling it “pure cinema,” countering what director Martin Scorsese said about Marvel movies in 2019.

Marvel Studios’ next movie, Thunderbolts* will arrive in theaters on May 2, 2025. Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie focuses on anti-heroes Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, US Agent, and Taskmaster coming together for a perilous mission.

The Stranger Things star recently connected with ScreenRant and talked about Thunderbolts* following the release of its recent A24-style trailer. While Harbour was present to promote The Working Man, he lauded Thunderbolts* for honoring the talent associated with it in the new trailer.

He stated that the idea of the movie was neglected by the Marvel community when it was announced. However, the stars being a “bunch of film and theater nerds” allowed them “a real freedom to do something different” with Thunderbolts*.

David Harbour further praised Thunderbolts* by referring to it as “exciting” and added, “I think that it’s a sort of shot in the arm for what’s next for Marvel, and yeah, it’s full of pretentious Oscar nominees like Florence Pugh. We have to highlight that. Sebastian Stan. I mean, the credits are insane. The awards, the glitter, it’s absolute pure cinema.”

The actor’s “cinema” comment counters what director Martin Scorsese said about Marvel movies in his 2019 interview. While talking to Empire that year, Scorsese conveyed that he doesn’t watch Marvel movies. He said, “That’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
