Marvel Comics’ vampire-centric event kick-off from the creative team of Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and Cory Petit also features an epic heel turn by one of the heroes.

As the Avengers battle the swarm of vampires that have seemingly come out of nowhere after the sun is mysteriously blacked out, Blade appears on the scene with important information regarding the threat. With the help of the Avengers, the Daywalker is supposedly transported to their orbital base, the Impossible City. A new breed of vampires, the Bloodcoven, show up on the base instead of Blade and proceed to decimate Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The Bloodcoven, led by Bloodstorm One, makes short work of the Avengers, with its blade-wielding member, Damascene, dispatching Thor by driving one of its sharp red blades into the God of Thunder’s skull. Bloodstorm One covets Sam Wilson, desiring to turn his Captain America into a vampire symbol for their blood-drenched cause. Black Panther’s attempt to evacuate as many Avengers as he can earns him a gruesome death at the hands of the Vampire leader.

Blade visits Doctor Strange and Clea, who frantically work on a spell to eradicate the vampire infestation. Blade elaborates on the details of the vampire invasion, revealing that the blood-sucking night creatures had organized under a group known as The Structure. Moon Knight had cut off the head of the snake in Moon Knight #18, but a new figure had risen to pick up the dead leader’s mantle. Blood Hunt #1 finally reveals that it was indeed Blade who was now the head of The Structure. It was he who blacked out the sun and assembled the vampires. The first chapter of Marvel’s vampire saga ends with Blade literally stabbing Doctor Strange in the back.
