Uncovered details unveiled an unexpected piece of trivia for Marvel fans! Yes, you read that right. Thor, the God of Thunder, played by the hunky Chris Hemsworth in Avengers: Infinity War, was initially set to have a potentially R-rated storyline. This spin did not make it to the final cut of the film. But let’s dive deeper into what was planned and why it was backed out on.

A Change in Thor’s Journey

Remember when Thor faced Thanos at the kick-off of Avengers: Infinity War, and things didn’t go so well for our hero? That defeat left him needing some R&R and, more importantly, a new tool for ass kicking. Thor then joins forces with the Guardians to find a new weapon in Nidavellir. Sounds neat, right? Well, that wasn’t the original idea.

Behind the Alternate Tale

It’s a treat to discover that the initial plan was more like an Indiana Jones adventure thanks to Eleni Roussos’ 2019 book Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie. It showcases artwork featuring Thor, Rocket, and Groot squaring off against serpents in Jormungand. They would have been seeking Stormbreaker, nicely tucked away inside a massive World Serpent’s remains. Sounds cool and maybe a teeny bit more intense, right?

The Cut Scene’s Origins

We owe the initial idea to Rodney Fuentebella, Marvel’s Senior Visual Development Artist. Thor wouldn’t have forged Stormbreaker—it would have been used by his ancestors to bring down the World Serpent. But when they tried to retrieve it, they faced the World Serpent’s offspring. A pretty cool setup, don’t you think? Sadly, it didn’t make it to the final cut of Avengers: Infinity War.

Scrapped Because of Ratings?

Why did this exciting sequence get the boot? Simple—they thought it might push the movie’s rating to R. Marvel movies have fans across all ages, and the thought of mini World Serpents squaring off might have been too intense. Even though they’re not people, Marvel decided to play it safe.

Linking It Back to Marvel’s Comics

The World Serpent and Stormbreaker are real old-timers in the Marvel Universe. The big, bad Serpent comes from Norse mythology and found its way to Marvel’s pages as the Midgard Serpent in 1952. Stormbreaker, on the other hand, was first forged by Odin for Beta Ray Bill, who proved he was worthy of lifting Thor’s Mjölnir.

The decision from Marvel to tweak this epic scene shows their focus is on family-friendly content. They are cautious about not straying from their core audience. So, while we may have missed an R-rated Thor adventure, we can still look forward to plenty of action, laughter and surprises in the Marvel Universe.

To enter the Marvel Universe and revisit the existing story of Thor, get your popcorn ready and head to Disney+ to stream Avengers: Infinity War along with many other Marvel hits. It’s always exciting to rewatch these classic tales of heroism and adventure, especially when you know a bit more about what could have happened. So, turn the lights down, turn the volume up and enjoy!
