Warning! Contains Spoilers for Immortal Thor #7!

Thor just raised some serious concerns about the hierarchy of power in the Marvel Universe by asking one simple question. Though the God of Thunder might be current Asgardian All-Father, even he has come to realize there are more powerful deities lurking in the Marvel Universe, and it seems that he has been set on an inevitable path toward confronting them.

Immortal Thor #7 – written by Al Ewing, with art by Martín Cóccolo, color by Matt Wilson, and lettering by Joe Sabino – continues the reimagining of a classic 1970s Thor story, in which Thor and Loki travel into the land of massive, powerful beings known as the Utgardrealm.

Ewing and his creative team introduced the mythology of the Utgard Gods to Marvel’s cosmic lore at the start of the series, and now the series has posed a question that could have major implications moving forward, as Thor asks: “…Is there an Utgard-Odin?”

Immortal Thor Continues To Reinvent Marvel’s Cosmic Pantheon

Now, Thor has asked the most significant question possible about the Utgard-deities: ”
…Is there an Utgard-Odin
?” Thor’s pondering is laid over-top of an image of an Odin-esque figure, trekking through a snowstorm, against a cosmic backdrop rendered brilliantly by artist Martín Cóccolo.

As established in Immortal Thor, the Utgard beings are the prototypical deities, as old as creation itself, the memories of which have shaped the current generation of Asgardian gods. Immortal Thor #1 introduced the massive, threatening Toranos, the Utgard-Thor, while Immortal Thor #7 definitively confirms that the being known as both “Utgard” and “Skyrimir” from 1978’s Thor #272 was in fact Utgard-Loki in disguise, testing Thor and Loki resolve. Further, the series has revealed that Thor’s mother Gaea is, in fact, an Utgard-being, making Thor a direct descendent of these entities.

Now, Thor has asked the most significant question possible about the Utgard-deities: “…Is there an Utgard-Odin?” Thor’s pondering is laid over-top of an image of an Odin-esque figure, trekking through a snowstorm, against a cosmic backdrop rendered brilliantly – as is every page in Immortal Thor #7 – by artist Martín Cóccolo. Beyond just suggesting that the answer is yes, this unresolved conclusion makes it seem likely that a meeting between this powerful being and the Asgardian Odinson is coming sooner rather than later.

Utgard-Odin Could Be One Of Marvel’s Most Powerful Beings

Utgard-Odin’s strength is likely to be orders magnitude greater than Thor’s father. If he emerges as an antagonist, he could prove to be a threat too powerful even for the current All-father, the Mighty Thor.

The introduction of the Utgard-gods has already significantly shifted readers’ understanding of power in the Marvel Universe, adding another primordial faction to the Universe’s increasingly crowded level of cosmic threats. Now, the set-up for Utgard-Odin’s official introduction makes this even more pronounced. The Asgardian Odin was long depicted as one of Marvel’s most powerful gods, and if the Utgard-entities introduced already are any indication, Utgard-Odin’s strength is likely to be orders magnitude greater than Thor’s father. If he emerges as an antagonist, he could prove to be a threat too powerful even for the current All-father, the Mighty Thor.
