The lost sidekick of Thorhas debuted in Marvel Comics, but as she assembles the New Champions, Hellrune hasimmediately become a standout character among the rest of her fellow teammates. Though Hellrune has only just begun to unlock her unknown abilities in the new team series, she’s already displaying incredible potential, which could lead to her becoming a major powerhouse in the future of Marvel Comics.
New Champions #1 – written by Steve Foxe, with art by Ivan Fiorelli and Ig Guara – establishes the new team, which forms around Hellrune, giving her a pivotal role in this new story, while also suggesting that she will have a longer-term impact in the Marvel Universe.
While trying to discover her family and learn more about her history, Hellrune accidentally awakens zombie Vikings. To assist her in battle, Hellrune’s magical birds teleport her friends to her side, while also, surprisingly, sending along some young heroes she doesn’t know.

Capable of bringing Marvel’s all-new super-team together by accident, Hellrune is already proving to be an impressively powerful new character in not only the new series, but Thor’s godly corner of the universe. Though she’s still honing her abilities, Hellrune manages to bring her friends and the other potential New Champions from across the Marvel Universe to her aid all the way off the coast of Norway. Since she’s able to transport not only her established teammates, but characters she doesn’t even know, like Spider-Boy and the cool blue-costumed Ghost Rider sidekick Fantasma, her unexplained powers already seem immense.

After months of anticipation, Marvel has finally announced a fresh “New Champions” series, featuring iconic original heroes like Hellrune and Liberty.
Hellrune takes a primary role in New Champions, as one of four founding members of the team, alongside Liberty, Cadet Marvel, and Moon Squire. Though all four of the heroes officially formed the team after falling victim to a Hydra scheme that had them kidnapped and brainwashed, Hellrune was the only New Champion without a home and family to return to. With her origins still a mystery to be explored as the series continues, there seems to be much more to Hellrune than has been revealed so far, which will bring the character into focus as New Champions progresses.

New Champions Will Unravel The Lost Sidekick’s Story
Though the New Champions are pitched as sidekicks to the Avengers, the new heroes really don’t share much actual connection to the established heroes they’re supposed to be based on. However, since Hellrune is still a bit of an enigma, there’s still a chance for her to be tied to Thor more closely. With her Norse magic and secret family lineage being teased for the character, Hellrune could possibly be related to some version of Thor in the Marvel Multiverse, and should make for a unique addition to Thor comics if explored further, even apart from her new team.
As she establishes herself as perhaps the New Champions’ most powerful member, Thor’s new sidekick should get the credit she deserves as an extraordinary new addition to Marvel Comics.
Hellrune is already an incredibly important character in the New Champions lineup, as she becomes the reason that their roster expands to include all the heroes that her mysterious powers helped bring together. The character could still get even more powerful while she uncovers the secrets behind her origins, and the series’ first issue already teases an aunt that could explain her connection to Thor lore. Associated with the mythical realm of Asgard, Thor is a Marvel Comics hero who channels the power of thunder to slay their foes. Though the name is chiefly tied to Thor Odinson, several other characters also take on the role of God of Thunder, including Odinson’s love interest, Jane Foster.
