The following contains major spoilers for New Champions #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s New Champions have just revealed how little the world actually knows about them, and it is utterly heartbreaking.
After a day of fighting superpowered villains and saving the day, the eponymous heroes of New Champions #1 are finally able to return home to their respective daily lives. Or rather, they are finally able to return to what little they have left of those lives. As it turns out, every single member of the team suffered the same fate after being caught in Hydra’s clutches, with their families having all their memories of their own heroic children being stolen away for months, if not years that there is simply no getting back.

While the various members of the New Champions had all been glimpsed previously, the heroes at the core of the team wouldn’t be given a proper introduction until 2024’s Spider-Woman #7 by Steve Foxe and Ig Guara. This introduced the likes of Hellrune, Liberty, Cadet Marvel, and Moon Squire as the Assembly, a band of young superheroes led by the hulking Titan. From the very beginning, however, it was clear that something wasn’t quite right about the team, nor their all too confident leader.
Soon enough, it was revealed that Titan was in fact merely a guise for the villainous Kondrati Yurivich Topolov, better known as the Gremlin. Introduced all the way back in 1973’s Incredible Hulk #163 by Steve Englehart and Herb Trimpe, Gremlin was the son of Yuri Topolov, aka the similarly diminutive evil super-genius known as Gargoyle. Tricked into believing that the Hulk was responsible for his father’s death, Kondrati embarked upon a long and storied career as a supervillain, taking part in various storylines such as Marvel Comics’ first Armor Warsas his very own version of the Titanium Man.

Spider-Man’s Greatest Love Is Teaming Up With Marvel’s Most Controversial Villain
One of Spider-Man’s most fiery love interests is officially the next biggest problem for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, encountered the Assembly after making her way to the West Coast in search of her son, Gerry, who had been stolen away by Hydra. While in Hydra’s care, the once infantile Gerry was artificially aged and brainwashed into being the perfect assassin. When Spider-Woman began digging into the Assembly, she discovered that the young heroes at the heart of the team, save for Titan, had all been subjected to the same fate as her own son after being targeted by Hydra for their powers and stolen away from their families to become unwitting villains in their own right. After Gremlin’s demise, the heroes of the Assembly were free to try and restart their lives, leading them to try and become the heroes they always wanted to be as the New Champions.
