The following contains major spoilers for “The Last Nova” from the pages of Annihilation 2099 #1, on sale July 3 from Marvel Comics.

A whole new breed of Annihilation has just run wild through the cosmos of Marvel 2099, and not even Nova could stop it.

“The Last Nova” finds a lone Nova wandering through the streets of Xandar, protecting who he can from the small crimes that have plagued the world in the wake of Exo-Parasites who ravaged it and its protectors. As Nova thinks back on his career, he remembers the moment he was subjected to an experimental procedure that imbued his body with near limitless power. Tragically, the procedure was cut short by a horde of Exo-Parasites whose attack left him the only member of the Nova Core left standing.

Marvel’s original Nova, Richard Rider, made his comic book debut all the way back in 1976’s Nova #1 by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema. Richard led a normal life on Earth up until he was sought out by the alien Rhomann Dey, who imbued the unwitting human with the power of Nova. Soon enough, Richard was embarking on his own career as a superhero on Earth, although it wouldn’t be long before he was called to duty out among the stars.

The first interstellar Annihilation event began in 2006 when Annihilus, the insectile ruler of the Negative Zone, unleashed his hordes across the cosmos in a bid for absolute power. Along the way, Annihilus and his army laid waste to numerous worlds and claimed countless lives. The villain even managed to turn Galactus’ own cosmically empowered heralds into prisoners, yet even this display of strength was not enough to keep Nova from bringing Annihilus’ reign of terror to an end.

In 2019, Annihilation: Scourge by Matthew Rosenberg, Juanan Ramirez, and Cian Tormey kicked off, with the malevolent forces of the Cancerverse making their way into the primary Marvel Universe. 2021 marked the most recent of these events, The Last Annihilation, which saw Dormammu take to the cosmic stage in his own latest bid for power.
