After Scarlet Witch’s new sidekick is introduced by Agatha Harkness, the mysterious young sorceress reveals the true extent of her power and swiftly displays how it’s potentially a problem for Wanda. When Amaranth debuts in the latest issue of Scarlet Witch, Wanda agrees to mentor the troubled girl. However, as she figures out her powers and the secrets of her origin, Amaranth could be a major magic threat.
In Scarlet Witch #6 – written by Steve Orlando, with art by Lorenzo Tammetta – Wanda and her new sorceress studentgo up against the Eliminator, a spell-tempered android that was seemingly sent to destroy the Scarlet Witch, but is abruptly stopped with ease by Amaranth, adding to the mystery of just how powerful this new Marvel character truly is.
When even Wanda can’t stop the Eliminator as it’s hexed to self-destruct and eliminate the hero, Amaranth uses the power of abjuration to snuff out the spell. With the ability to suppress magic, Amaranth’s true power could be Wanda’s downfall.

With the power of abjuration up her sleeve, Amaranth is set to be a formidable force against the Scarlet Witch and really any of the Marvel Universe’s supernatural and magical beings. Though her origins are still shrouded in mystery, it’s made clear in Scarlet Witch #6 that her power has already spooked Agatha Harkness, which is seemingly why she tries to make her Wanda’s problem instead of her own. In a move that even the Scarlet Witch couldn’t pull off, Amaranth’s ability to totally dismantle a magic spell and absorb it with a purple glow illustrates her extraordinary untapped potential.

Former New Champion Amaranth makes her Marvel Comics debut in Scarlet Witch #6 as Agatha Harkness fearfully asks Wanda to train the young sorceress.
Wanda tells Amaranth that her abjuration power is an advanced skill that was discovered by an ancient sorceress who also happens to be a descendant of Wanda’s fellow Avenger, Storm. Since the young sidekick of Scarlet Witch seems to easily use this magic-suppressing ability without even truly knowing her power or its limits, she could become a real problem for any magic user in the universe, especially as she continues her training under Wanda. Thankfully for Marvel’s magic heroes, Amaranth seems to be following a hero’s path with previews of her spot on the new legacy superhero team, New Champions.

At the end of Amaranth’s debut issue, Agatha reappears to shine more light on why she delivered the young sorceress to Wanda. With the potential sidekick’s anti-magic powers striking fear in the witch, Agatha has delivered Amaranth to Wanda as a last ditch effort to defeat the new character. It’s also revealed that Agatha sent the Eliminator after her two former students of the craft, hoping to help Wanda realize that the New Champion must be defeated. Though Amaranth’s power is a serious threat to the Scarlet Witch, Wanda is still determined to be a mentor despite Agatha’s best efforts.
As Amaranth debuts with extraordinary abilities that could easily beat her hero mentor, the Scarlet Witch has the opportunity to empower or attempt to defeat her new sidekick.
With Agatha trying to get rid of her, Amaranth already has a target on her back due to her power being a detriment to Marvel’s magic community. Though it’s not clear yet where she came from or how powerful she may truly be, the young sorceress has made an immediate splash in the universe by eliminating a villain that even her extremely powerful Avenger teacher couldn’t manage to take down. As Amaranth debuts with extraordinary abilities that could easily beat her hero mentor, the Scarlet Witch has the opportunity to empower or attempt to defeat her new sidekick.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Scarlet Witch debuted, along with her twin brother, Quicksilver in X-Men #4 (March 1964). Also known as Wanda Maximoff, she first appears as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before she eventually became a member of the Avengers. In the comics, she is a mutant who uses chaos magic to alter reality.
