Earlier this month, Marvel announced Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr’s run on Amazing Spider-Man will be coming to an end. Now, in a surprise release of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #0, Marvel has also revealed who will be taking over from Wells as the next Amazing Spider-Man writer. The new writer will be veteran Marvel comic book writer, Joe Kelly.

Joe Kelly, who, like Zeb Wells, was a member of the Spider-Man “Brain Trust” during the “Brand New Day” era of Amazing Spider-Man (where a rotating group of writers were in charge of the series from 2008-2010), will be taking over Amazing Spider-Man at some point before the end of the year. Kelly is most famous for writing Deadpool’s first ongoing series, which launched in 1997, with artist Ed McGuinness (the series that made McGuinness a star, as well). Kelly has been one of the most important Deadpool writers in the character’s history, and previously wrote for the Spider-Man/Deadpool ongoing series, as well.

Where was the Spider-Man news revealed?

In this week’s Blood Hunt #4, Marc Spector was brought back to life, as Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappcucio, and Rachelle Rosenberg’s Moon Knight run will now continue in a new series, Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu. Marvel did a surprise release of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu, releasing a #0 issue NEXT WEEK, with comic book retailers having to order the comic book right now to receive them next week.

In the meantime, some comic book stores received a special variant edition of Moon Knight: Fist of Khoshu #0 this week, and on the packaging for the comic book, it notes that it also includes a preview of the next era for Amazing Spider-Man, and Joe Kelly is revealed as the new Amazing Spider-Man writer. Since Moon Knight: Fist of Khoshu #1 is due out in October, it stands to reason that Kelly’s run on Amazing Spider-Man will launch around that time, as well.

The end of Peter Parker’s most unlikely friendship inevitably arrives because of Norman Osborn’s twisted other self — Green Goblin.

When will the current Amazing Spider-Man run end?

Earlier this month, Marvel revealed that this September, Spider-Man will be facing off against Tombstone, who became the head of all of the super-crime in New York City after the finale of the Gang War crossover event earlier this year. Tombstone had made killing Spider-Man, who was his ally during Gang War, his top priority, as he feels no one will respect him as a leader if they think that he is still allied with a superhero like Spider-Man.

The reveal of the Tombstone story arc also noted that it was the FINAL story arc for Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. That story arc begins in September’s Amazing Spider-Man #58, but it is unclear how long the story will last, so Joe Kelly’s Amazing Spider-Man run might have to wait a bit longer to commence.
