The following contains major spoilers for Red Hulk #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel Comics’ original Red Hulk is on a mission to destroy Doctor Doom’s empire from the inside out.

Red Hulk #1 finds General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross imprisoned by none other than the world’s self-proclaimed supreme leader, Doctor Doom, who spends his days mulling over various war game strategies. As it turns out, Ross is just one of several key figures who have been captured by Doom and unwittingly forced to serve as his personal military think tank. Unfortunately for Doom, it seems the Latverian dictator never quite expected anything more than brovado from his prisoners, which is exactly why it was so easy for Ross to free himself and reclaim the power of the Red Hulk raging away within him.

General Ross made his Marvel Comics debut all the way back in 1962’s Incredible Hulk #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. During his time stationed in Desert Base, New Mexico, Ross watched on in anger as the civilian scientist Bruce Banner took command of the United States Army’s Gamma Bomb project, not to mention as Banner embarked upon a fiery romance with the general’s own daughter, Betty Ross. When Banner was transformed into the Hulk, it was Ross who spent decades leading the hunt for the raging brute, though he wouldn’t discover the truth of who was behind the Hulk for quite some time.

Over the decades that followed, Ross’ hatred for Banner and the Hulk fomented into a truly unhinged sort of rage, so much so that he joined forces with the villains of the Intelligencia in their plot to destroy the Hulk once and for all. With the help of M.O.D.O.K., the Leader, and Doc Samson, Ross was imbued with all the life energy that the Intelligencia stole away from the Hulk. This led to Ross’ transformation into the Red Hulk, as well as his complete control over his own transformations and the raging beast they would release.

Ultimate Spider-Man Just Killed a Marvel Mainstay

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe just lost one of its most important heroes, and not even Spider-Man stood a chance of saving him.

Although the role of General Thunderbolt Ross was previously portrayed by the late, great William Hurt in various Marvel Studios films, it wasn’t until the recent release of Captain America: Brave New World that the character’s Red Hulk persona made its own Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as portrayed by Harrison Ford. Ford previously opened up about taking over the role, explaining, “I was alittle concerned about taking over from Bill Hurt, who was a wonderful actor.” Ford continued, “I was ambitious to find the right way of assuming this character after the audience had seen other people doing it. I’m only slightly familiar with the Marvel Universe – I live in another universe but I have watched a number of Marvel films with wonderful actors, apparently having a good time. And I thought, ‘Well, why not me?”
