Thor is one of the strongest heroes in all of Marvel Comics history. His battles with foes are often earth-shattering displays of strength and raw power, and his time as an Avenger has proven that he is one of the most reliable powerhouses that the team has ever seen.
Though Thor’s most iconic foe, his half-brother Loki, is less of a physical threat and more of a mental and emotional villain, the God of Thunder also has plenty of villains who match him toe-to-toe in a strength-based confrontation. Wielding the uber-powerful magic hammer Mjolnir, Thor is incredibly strong, which means that his villains have to be even stronger to pose a threat to the Asgardian hero.

The Destroyer Is An Asgardian Suit of Magically-Powered Armor
The Weapon Created By Odin Has Threatened Thor for Decades
The Destroyer Armor is one of the most dangerous and powerful entities in Marvel Comics history, and it has proven itself to be a match for Thor Odinson on many occasions. Often facing off against the God of Thunder when it is being possessed by outside forces like Loki, the Destroyer is one of the most iconic members of Thor’s rogues gallery, and though it is not necessarily inherently villainous, the many ways that the armor has been utilized to vanquish the heroic Thor prove that it is often a force of evil rather than for good.

Thor’s Hammer Is Strong, but These Marvel Heroes and Weapons May Break It
Mjolnir, Thor’s Hammer, is one of Marvel’s strongest weapons, but even it can shatter.
First appearing in the pages of Journey into Mystery #118 in 1965, the Destroyer’s power levels are absolutely unbelievable. With superhuman strength rivaling Thor himself, super-speed, stamina, and invulnerability, as well energy manipulation and devastating blasts from its face-plate, the Destroyer has defeated the God of Thunder more times than he would perhaps care to admit. The Destroyer was even featured in the first live-action Thor film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder faced off against it in a small New Mexico town.

How Beta Ray Bill Changed Our View of Thor’s Hammer Forever
In their latest spotlight on notable comic retcons, CSBG sees how Beta Ray Bill’s debut changed our view of Thor’s hammer forever
Often seen leading major groups of troll underlings in attacks on Asgard and Earth, Ulik has proven himself to be a frightening opponent that Thor would be foolish to underestimate. Though their clashes almost always result in Thor defeating the hyper-strong troll, Ulik’s tenacity and dedication to battle mean that he is always primed for a return to face off against Thor again. Ulik once even took advantage of Thor’s death to trick the world into thinking he never existed, and that he himself was actually a heroic, god-like member of the Avengers.
The Super-Strong Enemy of Thor and Odin Was Unleashed By Ulik
The terrifying being known as the Mangog is one of Thor’s most frightening opponents. The literal, physical manifestation of the hatred of billions of beings that Odin and the forces of Asgard wiped out long ago, Mangog is one of the most powerful foes Thor has ever faced. Originally unleashed by Ulik in a bid to ally against Asgard, Mangog has repeatedly come to blows with Thor and his godly allies.

Thor’s Evil Turn in Marvel Comics Proves How Devastating a Despot He Could Be
While Thor is one of the MCU’s best heroes, in the comics, he has turned evil before. Here’s how.
With unbelievable strength and ferocity, Mangog is a creature that Thor is often incapable of besting in a one-on-one fight. Though Thor’s powers are great, even he struggles against the sheer power of the Mangog. So powerful that even the combined mights of Thor, Odin, and Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor were only barely able to defeat him, Mangog is a terrifying reminder that even the strongest gods in the Marvel Universe are capable of defeat.

Gorr the God Butcher Gave Thor One of His Toughest Battles
The Terrifying Wielder of the Necrosword Slayed Countless Gods Before Battling Thor
Gorr is one of Thor’s newest villains, and his introductory storyline has gone down as one of the very best tales in all of the Thor series’ history. The story brought three eras of Thor Odinsons together through time travel to battle against the terrifying forces of Gorr — and even then, it was a terrifically difficult ordeal. The villain’s hatred for all gods in existence, as well as his incredibly powerful weapon, All-Black the Necrosword, made Gorr a major threat.
Originally appearing in Thor: God of Thunder #2, Gorr has gone on to become one of the most recognizable foes in Thor’s rogues gallery, even becoming the lead antagonist of the latest entry in the live-action Thor film series, Thor: Love and Thunder. Although the film was generally panned by fans, Christian Bale’s portrayal of Gorr remained the standout aspect of an otherwise forgettable movie. Gorr’s centuries-long quest to rid the universe of gods was one of the most terrifying tales in all of Thor’s history, and the fact that it was so difficult for three Thors to defeat the villain just proves further how incredibly powerful he is.
The Fire Giant Lord of Muspelheim Is a Terrifying Threat to All of Asgard
One of the most interesting aspects of Thor and his comic book stories in the Marvel Universe is how the classic Norse mythology is used and adjusted through the lens of a superhero universe. Surtur is, in Norse myth, the entity that begins the cascading effects of Ragnarök, the end of everything and the death of the gods. In Marvel Comics, Surtur fulfills the same purpose, but in a world where Thor and his supporting cast are expected to continue their adventures in subsequent stories, Ragnarök is something that must be averted at all costs.

The Serpent Is Destined to Kill Thor
The Villainous Older Brother of Odin Plays a Deadly Part In the Ragnarok Prophecy
Cul Borson, aka the Serpent, is the secret older brother of Odin, the All-father of Asgard and Thor’s father. As Thor’s uncle, Cul Borson waged war on Asgard and the earth when he was finally released from the prison that Odin had been keeping him in for millennia. During the Fear Itself event, Cul Borson unleashed a torrent of violence on the Earth, sending out hammers similar to Thor’s own Mjölnir for beings on Earth to utilize in his name. Those who took up the hammers became known as “the Worthy”, and they wreaked havoc across the globe. Thor and his human allies attempted to stop the forces of the Serpent, and, realizing that his uncle was part of the ancient prophecy of Ragnarok, Thor faced off against his kin.

The Best Marvel Events of All Time, Ranked
From Secret Invasion to Civil War, Marvel Comics has had some of the most acclaimed events in comic book history.
Perhaps Thor’s most epic and destructive battle, the end of the Fear Itself event saw the God of Thunder facing off against his villainous uncle, now in the form of the Midgard Serpent, the mythological beast destined to slay Thor. One of the few beings actually successful in its goal of killing Thor (even if it was temporary), the Serpent’s power levels are far and above anything the Asgardian hero had faced prior, and he has yet to face off against anything quite so dangerous since. The Serpent eventually returned in the wake of Fear Itself, as did Thor himself, but his terrifying might and power were felt most heavily when he arrived to fulfill his deadly prophecy. Thor has faced many terrifying threats over the years, but his deadly uncle is arguably his strongest foe.
