Daredevil: Born Again has replaced one of the best characters from the original Marvel show with someone who has a surprising connection to Venom. This is even though Venom is a character ostensibly under Sony’s purview, with the character’s solo trilogy grossing over $1 billion for Sony and blowing all other installments of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise out of the water. While it is highly unlikely that Venom will appear in Daredevil: Born Again, the fact that it features so many characters tied to Spider-Man’s mythos, including Daredevil and Kingpin, speaks to the connectedness of New York-based Marvel heroes.

Despite being a sequel series to the Netflix-based Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again has debuted a litany of new characters, including Matt Murdock’s new law firm partner, Kirsten McDuffie, and his new love interest, Heather Glenn. This is seemingly at the expense of established characters from the original series, with legacy characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page being sidelined. Wilson Fisk has also started to surround himself with new characters, from James Gandolfini’s Daniel Blake to Arty Froushan’s Buck Cashman. While Blake has no ties to Marvel Comics, Cashman has a notable comic book counterpart.

Buck Cashman Is Seen Carrying Out Fisk’s Dirty Work

Buck Cashman is introduced in Daredevil: Born Again as Wilson Fisk’s right-hand man, carrying out clandestine activities on behalf of Fisk as he puts on a noble front as the newly elected New York Mayor. It is rare to see Fisk without a go-to assistant willing to get their hands dirty, which was a role that Benjamin Poindexter vied for in Daredevil season 3 before their violent falling-out. The most prominent of these assistants, however, was James Wesley, who played an important role in Daredevil season 1 before Karen Page killed him with his own gun.

Wesley’s legacy was still felt in Daredevil season 3 as Karen Page admitted to Fisk that she was responsible for his death. Proving that Wesley’s death was still raw and that Kingpin harbored a special soft spot for his late collaborator, Fisk subsequently ordered Page’s death in retaliation. Whether Cashman will now fill the void left by Wesley remains to be seen, but if Marvel Studios is gearing up for an accurate adaptation of the character, Cashman could be a far more formidable partner in crime.

Buck Cashman Is A Superpowered Lackey Of Wilson Fisk

Buck Cashman is a shady black ops agent in Marvel Comics, operating under the pseudonym “Bullet.” Bullet boasts a litany of superpowers in the comics, including the commonplace smattering of super-strength, super-speed, and enhanced durability. These superpowers (the origins of which remain unclear) allow him to perform feats that even outperform Wilson Fisk. It remains decidedly unclear if Arty Froushan’s rendition of Cashman will boast the same litany of superpowers as his comic book counterpart, however, especially as he does not imitate Bullet’s size and stature.

What is comic-accurate, however, is Buck Cashman’s affiliation to Wilson Fisk. While Cashman begins his comic book career as a covert operative for the government, he subsequently operates under the employ of Fisk and unsurprisingly comes to blows with Daredevil as a consequence. He also works under another of Fisk’s most formidable goons, Typhoid Mary, who appeared in the Iron Fist series, though it is unclear if she’ll reemerge in Daredevil: Born Again. More interesting than his street-level career as a Fisk employee, however, is Cashman’s direct link to the Venom symbiote.

One Of Venom’s Spawn Bonds With Cashman

After resigning from his shady dealings with New York’s villainous cohort, Buck Cashman attempts to live a simple life with his dog, Mitch, in the forest. Unbeknownst to him, however, Mitch was the chosen host of the symbiote spawn of Venom, Phage. Phage bonded with the dog as a retirement plan of his own after being part of the Life Foundation’s Guardian Symbiotes and suffering under the thrall of Knull. Phage’s villainy continues, however, as Carnage later calls on him to be a part of his hive, causing him to violently bond with Cashman instead.

As Phage, Cashman boasts the typical array of powers boasted by symbiotes, including transmutation and regenerative abilities, though he is vulnerable to Anti-Venom’s powers. Cashman hosts the spawn of Venom for a short time before he is left for dead by the symbiote, who bonds once again with his dog. It remains eminently unlikely that this relationship with the Venom symbiote will be explored in Daredevil: Born Again. Then again, if Cashman survives the show, then perhaps the MCU will explore this story down the line.
