The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #11, on sale this week from Marvel Comics.

The new Ultimate Universe is about to meet Marvel’s most dangerous Asgardian.

The Ultimates #11 opens to find Thor and Sif having made the journey to the realm of Nidavellir, the home of the Dwarves who once served their craft with a dedicated heart and deft hand. Now, the Dwarves are lorded over by more monstrous forces who subjugate and oppress Nidavellir’s natives, reducing them to sweatshop line laborers. As tragic as this is, it is no surprise that Thor and Sif have come to help the Dwarves set themselves free, and all they have to do is knock Loki off the Trickster God’s gilded throne.

The Asgardian Trickster God known as Loki Laufeyson is one of the oldest characters in Marvel Comics history. The character first appeared in the Golden Age, taking center stage in nearly every single story from 1949’s Venus #6. It wasn’t until over a decade later that the Loki fans know best made his Marvel Comics debut in the opening story from 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #85, “Trapped by Loki, The God of Mischief,” by writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and legendary artist Jack Kirby.

Since then, Loki has become one of the most iconic, not to mention important characters in the entire Marvel Universe. Apart from being the inciting force behind the formation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Loki has played a prominent role in dozens of stories over the years. Unsurprisingly, Loki’s ever-shifting nature has seen the character branch off in multiple directions even without the help of the Multiverse, leading to numerous iterations of the same character existing side-by-side within the confines of individual iterations of the Marvel Universe at different points in time.

Marvel’s Revolution Brings Back the Hottest Hero of WWII

One of the most terrifying heroes of the Second World War is making a fiery comeback to help tear down Doctor Doom’s new empire.

The Loki of the current Ultimate Universe, also known as the reality of Earth-6160, stands as just the latest Marvel Comics icon to be reimagined for this new take on fans’ favorite pop culture setting. Although the reality of Earth-6160 greatly resembled its more well-known counterparts, everything changed with the arrival of the villainous Reed Richards, known as the Maker. Using his knowledge of historical events, including the personal lives and stories of numerous heroes and villains, the Maker “corrected” the course of this world’s trajectory almost entirely.

By doing so, the Maker was able to install himself as a shadow dictator of sorts, all while his council of superpowered world leaders acted in his stead to keep the general populace at relative peace. Worse still, the Maker was able to prevent the rise of nearly every single superhero who would normally stand against him, all the way up until a young Tony Stark followed in his father’s footsteps by doing just that and founding The Ultimates.

The Ultimates #11 will be available April 9 from Marvel Comics.
