Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Infinity Watch #1! The Infinity Stones are some of the most powerful artifacts in Marvel Comics – if not the most powerful artifacts when used together. That’s why they’ve been at the center of a number of stories, as there are many who seek the power the Infinity Stones offer. And now, Marvel fans are introduced to a new team of villains that are seeking the Stones. However, these villains aren’t interested in wielding the Stones, but eating them (seriously).

In Infinity Watch #1 by Derek Landy and Ruairí Coleman, all the new Infinity Stone bearers are settling into their new headquarters, holding meetings and deciding what to do with their god-tier power. Suddenly, they get an alert. Something is happening in New York City that requires their immediate attention. The Infinity Watch teleport there in an instant, finding themselves face-to-face with an all-new supervillain team: the Apeiron.

The members of the Apeiron look as terrifying as they sound, as if they are a race of goblin-like creatures from the deepest, darkest corners of the universe. While it’s not revealed exactly who they are or where they come from, this comic does reveal that the Apeiron are actually multiversal villains who travel from reality to reality doing one thing: consuming Infinity Stones. And now, their sights are set on the Infinity Watch.

The Apeiron are the Perfect Villains for the God-Tier Infinity Watch

The Infinity Watch Can Easily Defeat Classic Marvel Villains, but Not the Apeiron

When this new Infinity Watch team was introduced across 2024’s Marvel Annual books, the biggest concern moving forward was the question of who their villains would be. These aren’t just people holding the Infinity Stones (as the Infinity Watch has been in the past), these Infinity Watch members have fused with the Stones. For all intents and purposes, they are the Infinity Stones, meaning they can bend reality or manipulate time as easily as Spider-Man can thwip his webs.

So, naturally, fans were concerned about the team’s villains, because it didn’t seem like anyone could be a threat to this team of gods. But now, those concerns can be put to rest with the Apeiron. These villains not only have the power to take on the might of the Infinity Stones, but they’ve successfully done so in the past, meaning their threat level is very much established. Plus, the manner in which the Apeiron defeat the power of the Stones is utterly terrifying, as they literally view the Infinity Stones as food.

Ironically, the Apeiron Might Be the LEAST of the Infinity Watch’s Worries

Another Villain was Also Introduced in Infinity Watch #1: Avery Zala

While the Apeiron are certainly perfect villains for this new incarnation of the Infinity Watch, they might actually be the least of their worries compared to another villain introduced in this comic: Avery Zala. Zala is a Stone Bearer (specifically, the Mind Stone) from another universe. His fellow Infinity Watch members were consumed by the Apeiron, and he’s traveled to Earth-616 to get the main-continuity Infinity Watch to help him restore his universe – by force, if necessary. Indeed, Zala murdered Colleen Wing (the Mind Stone bearer) without the Infinity Watch even knowing, proving how dangerous Zala really is.

Marvel Officially Introduces Eighth Infinity Stone, But This One Breaks All the Rules

Shortly after introducing the new Death Stone, Phil Coulson just discovered a new EIGHTH Infinity Stone – but this one doesn’t play by the rules.

Zala could very well murder the Infinity Watch and use the Stones to reshape Earth-616 to his liking, saving his reality while dooming Marvel’s main universe. However, at the end of the day, the Apeiron are really the ones to blame for this entire situation, making them the most pressing threat. Plus, the Apeiron’s mere existence changes Infinity Stone lore in Marvel Comics forever, as they are the first characters to see the Infinity Stones not as powerful artifacts to wield, but as literal food.
