Loki is facing off against the The Avengersagain next year, in an all-new graphic novel from two masters of the form. Chip Kidd and Michael Cho will be assembling the classic line-up of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor the Hulk, Giant Man and the Wasp to take on the team’s original big bad, but this time there’s a twist that could change everything…

Announced via Marvel.com, The Avengers in the Veracity Trap will be coming from Abrams Books through their “MarvelArts” partnership. Building off the success of Alex Ross’ Fantastic Four: Full Circle, the new graphic novel will be another high-quality offering from some of the best creators around.

The story sees Loki assembling a horde of monsters to tackle the World’s Greatest Superheroes, before the battle takes a strange turn. According to Marvel, this“typically raucous comic book take–down is revealed to be something very, very different.” Taking a turn into the metaphysical as the team is thrown into a “reality-bending adventure.

The Avengers in the Veracity Trap Promises an Epic Rematch Against Loki

Chip Kidd & Michael Cho Team for All-New Graphic Novel

There are many reasons to be excited for the new MarvelArts graphic novel, but chief amongst them is the creative team. Chip Kidd is unquestionably one of the greatest graphic designers of all time, and his books on comics history are must-reads for anyone interested in the medium. Michael Cho is also one of the pre-eminent cover artists working in the field today. While Cho has drawn many covers for Marvel and DC, he rarely draws interiors, so getting a full graphic novel illustrated by the artist will be a rare treat.

Chip Kidd talks a little about the new project, expressing surprise at the chances both Marvel and Abrams allowed him to take:

Writing this book was really just an excuse to see
Michael Cho depict glorious, epic, jaw-dropping sequential storytelling with these iconic characters that we love so much
. He more than delivered. Oh, and it was also my ultimate comics ego trip, which Abrams and Marvel actually allowed me to take. I still don’t know why but I am beyond grateful.

Michael Cho also talks about the opportunity to work with Kidd, explaining how drawing a classic Avengers story has always been a dream:

I’ve always held a special spot in my super-hero loving heart for the Avengers, especially the early Marvel age comics they appeared in.
The Veracity Trap is a tribute to the wonder, the delight, and the zany ‘anything could happen!’ spirit of those stories.
Chip wrote a fantastic and heartfelt story and, in drawing this book, I tried my best to channel some of the energy and, especially, the joy that crackled from the pages of those classic comics.

Having both Chip Kidd and Michael Cho team for a tribute to the Marvel Age of comics is a dream team in many ways, but the added meta-textual twist hinted at in the story should add a deeper than mere superhero pastiche.

The Avengers Embark on a “Reality-Bending Adventure”

The Veracity Trap Should Be More than Average Superhero Fare

Chip Kidd previously wrote the graphic novel Batman: Death by Design with artist Dave Taylor in 2015, so the celebrated graphic designer of the original Jurassic Park novel and more gets to play in the Marvel Universe with the new graphic novel coming next year. Just how “reality-bending” the new adventure starring the Avengers gets remains to be seen, but with the solicits promising an exploration of “heroism, villainy and existence,” it will hopefully be quite the ride. The Avengers in the Veracity Trap should not only be an epic rematch with Loki, but an exploration into the nature of comic book heroes and villains.
