Marvel Comics has finally given readers a glimpse at the exact moment Anakin Skywalker truly died.
Star Wars: Darth Vader #50 brings readers to the frozen, desolate wilderness of the South Pole on the secluded world of Caranthanax B. There, Darth Vader is caught in a battle between numerous opposing forces, including the Rebellion, the Schism Imperial, and the cybernetically enhanced M.A.R. Corpse. Of course, these aren’t the only combatants on the field, as Darth Vader soon enough finds himself facing off against none other than Emperor Palpatine. Unfortunately, whatever victory Darth Vader felt he had was only ever a figment of his his imagination. In contrast, the Emperor’s success is so obvious that all the little that remains of Anakin Skywalker can do is admit that he has finally lost everything – including himself.

Star Wars: Darth Vader has followed the titular Sith Lord across the galaxy in one of the most shocking journeys of his entire life. While Darth Vader has long been dedicated to the Galactic Empire, Star Wars: Darth Vader gave him plenty of reasons to strike out against the Emperor and attempt to build something even greater of his own. During the events of 2023’s Dark Droids crossover, Darth Vader was targeted by the Scourge, which sought to use him and other cyborgs as a means of tapping into the Force.
Not long after escaping the threat of The Scourge, Darth Vader joined forces with the Schism Imperial. This secretive group of spies and warriors made it their mission to usurp the Emperor’s place, making them the perfect allies for Darth Vader as he looked to do the very same. Though the Schism Imperial didn’t make their first full appearance until Darth Vader #41, their founder, the Sith “Umbaran,” Sly Moore, made her debut in 2005’s Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Following a trip to the darkest corners of Exegol, Star Wars: Darth Vader brought its titular villain and his allies to Caranthanax B for an epic confrontation with nearly everyone who had ever stood in his way. This included his own son, Luke Skywalker, who joined his Revel allies in making the trip in the hopes of staving off yet another cataclysmic event. While this put Luke directly in harm’s way, Darth Vader proved that he still harbors some amount of love for his son by saving the young Jedi’s life from what would have certainly been a lethal blast otherwise.
