Stan Lee has appeared in many Marvel movies – but there was one role that he didn’t get.

The well-beloved comic book writer and creative leader at Marvel Comics was present in several of their big-screen superhero films. From the early 2000’s X-Men films to the flagpole Avengers films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Stan Lee has cameos here or there in almost all of them. But in an interview with GQ, actor J.K. Simmons revealed that the comic book legend had originally wanted his role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

While breaking down his iconic role as J. Jonah Jameson with GQ, J.K. Simmons spoke about meeting Stan Lee for the first time and what he told him about his part in the movie. “I had never met Stan and didn’t even know – and this is kind of obvious to anybody who’s really paying attention, or (is) smarter than I am – that, you know, JJJ was kind of based on Stan. The comic version of himself,” Simmons said. “He confessed to me at the time that, you know, he was a little jealous that they didn’t ask him to play the part in the movie.”

You would think this would breed some contempt between the actor and Lee but Simmons said Lee’s reaction was very positive: “’But having seen you do it, I thought you were fantastic!’ And it was, you know, very nice things. Which, obviously coming from the man, was a great, great compliment.”
