Summary
Spider-Man and Superman aren’t exactly in the same league of heroics, but one Lex Luthor invention allowed Peter to unleash his full strength for a brief, shining moment. While there’s no denying that they’re both fantastic heroes, Superman could literally move the Earth if he had to. This is a little more than the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man can normally handle, which is why a fight between the two would be a disaster for Peter under regular circumstances.
During one of DC and Marvel’s iconic crossovers, the 1976 one-shot Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, Dick Giordano, Gaspar Saladino, and Jerry Serpe sees Superman and Spider-Man manipulated into a fight by Lex Luthor and Doctor Octopus. While this match-up may seem ridiculous due to the difference in the heroes’ strength levels, Spider-Man actually puts up a surprisingly effective fight.
Due to being empowered by red sun radiation, Spider-Man’s punches are able to completely overcome Superman’s invulnerability, allowing Spidey to hit the Man of Steel as hard as he would any normal man. And it’s not just a single lucky hit, as Spider-Man gets some superb hits on Superman and thoroughly knocks him around for a few minutes.
Faster Than A Speeding Bullet…Almost: One Moment Proves the Difference Between Spider-Man and Superman
Spider-Man may not be nearly as fast as Superman, but one issue proves he can still replicate one of the Man of Steel’s greatest feats… sometimes.
Superman can famously move faster than the eye can see, he can phase through objects, he has unbelievable physical strength, flight, heat vision, and dozens of other powers. He can do pretty much whatever he wants to do. Spider-Man has impressive powers as well, but not nearly to this degree. Peter’s powers are only enhanced agility, strength, durability, and his Spider-Sense. But when Superman’s invulnerability is removed, Spider-Man actually has more than enough strength to take Superman down.
While there’s no doubt Superman is stronger than Spider-Man, but a large part of that is due to the invulnerability that yellow sunlight provides him. When that gets bypassed, Clark is as vulnerable as the average human. This means Spider-Man’s enhanced strength is really hitting him. With a few punches and kicks, Spidey is able to make a fool out of Superman, to the point that the Man of Steel loses his temper and rushes at the Wall-Crawler in anger. After Superman manages to hit Spider-Man back, Peter also loses his power and tries to attack Superman with his full force. Luckily for Superman, the red sun radiation has worn off; otherwise, it’s possible Spider-Man could legitimately knock Superman out.
Spider-Man Easily Knocks Superman Around
While there’s no possible way for Spider-Man to hurt Superman under normal circumstances, thanks to the manipulations of Lex Luthor, Spider-Man is really able to stand up to the Man of Steel. Spider-Man is no slouch, but he’s far from the most powerful hero that Marvel has to offer. The two iconic heroes end their encounter as friends and allies, but for a moment, the most dangerous threat to Superman is the web-headed menace, Spider-Man.
