An iconic Spider-Man is ready to make a comeback, and his new costume draws clear inspiration from the Power Rangers. Marvel Comics has unveiled an exclusive look at Takuya Yamashiro, the Spider-Man variant from the Japanese Spider-Man series by Toei, and he’s been given an awesome redesign that feels like it came straight out of the Power Rangers franchise.
Via CBR, Marvel has released the cover for Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #3 by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, and Luciano Vecchio, which features Takuya Yamashiro’s updated Spider-Man costume in action. He will be making his return as part of the ongoing crossover event between the Spider-Verse and the Venomverse that has pitted the inhabitants of both multiverses against one another.
Designed by Vecchio, Takuya’s latest suit sets him apart from Peter Parker in a way that his classic suit from the TV show never did, making him stand out as his own unique Spider-Man. The Spider-Verse gets its own Power Rangers-inspired hero in this upcoming issue that fans won’t want to miss.

Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse #3 Design Variant by Luciano Vecchio
While Takuya Yamashiro originally wore a costume similar to that of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man in his classic series, he has now received a major design overhaul for the Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse event that gives him a more distinct identity. He maintains the usual red mask, but he combines it with light blue and white accents that resemble a classic Super Sentai suit more than the usual superhero spandex. Moreover, he has added a scarf and wings to his costume, pulling from Japanese inspiration instead of the standard Western idea of a superhero suit. Takuya’s Spider-Man finally stands out, and Luciano Vecchio’s design is to thank.

In an interview with CBR, Vecchio discussed his thought process behind this redesign for Takuya’s version of the Spider-Man. He explained:
“I rewatched episodes and clips of the Japanese Spider-Man show to tap into that universe’s sensitivity and dramatic body language, and also referred to other early 80s shows in the Tokusatsu genre for aesthetic cues like the scarf and black lenses. I bounced ideas and references with writer Mat Groom before landing on this visual that can be shortened to Spider-Man meets Super Sentai.”
The Tokusatsu genre refers to live-action movies and TV series from Japan that implement practical effects, with Power Rangers being a notable example. Toei’s Japanese Spider-Man also falls into this category, hence why the imminent comic comeback of Takuya as Spider-Man has chosen to stay true to those roots and implement staples of Super Sentai designs into his re-invented suit. Essentially, this Spider-Man’s costume is a love letter to the Power Rangers and all Japanese heroes like them.
