Spider-Man‘s daring new era in Marvel Comics is rapidly approaching, and the series is set to introduce a haunting new villain who would make an excellent addition to the Sinister Six. Hellgate will be debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, and John Romita Jr., and the design for this dark new villain has been unveiled.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 will be a relaunch of the fan-favorite title starring the iconic Web-Slinger himself, and he’ll be facing off against a villain unlike any other. Hellgate is teased in the synopsis for the series’ first issue, and the character design by John Romita Jr. offers an early glimpse at Spider-Man’s latest adversary.

In an interview with AIPT Comics, writer Joe Kelly dropped hints about what Hellgate will bring to the table in this story, promising a “really fun character” who has more to him lying beneath the surface than meets the eye and will undoubtedly keep Spider-Man on his toes.

Hellgate Is Ready to Debut as Spider-Man’s Dark New Enemy

Spider-Man Will Soon Face Off Against Hellgate, His Latest Villain

When discussing the upcoming introduction of Hellgate in his run on The Amazing Spider-Man, Joe Kelly told AIPT, “He’s gonna be pretty mysterious, but he’s got a lot going on, and he’s very strong.” The design alone, created by John Romita Jr., already communicates this imposing aspect of Spider-Man’s next adversary. Hellgate stands tall with a menacing suit of armor and axes that are ready for battle, setting him apart from the sillier enemies Spider-Man has faced off with. Rather than wearing a simple costume, Hellgate is geared up for combat, and Spider-Man had better be ready to defend himself once this foe hits the scene.

Spider-Man’s Secret Identity Is an Objectively Bad Idea Whether Peter Admits It or Not

Spider-Man having a secret identity has as many pros as it has cons, but can an argument be made that going public has financial benefits for Peter?

While not much is currently known about the role Hellgate will play in Spider-Man’s next adventure, the synopsis for the first issue hints at him potentially being the mastermind behind the Sinister Six’s operation:

ALIVE & THWIPPING! The next era of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has arrived! Peter is, shockingly, without a job and looking for gainful employment, but his job search is interrupted by a RAMPAGING RHINO who is but the tip of a sinister iceberg. What major Spider-Villain is working behind the scenes weaponizing other Spider-Villains including one we haven’t seen in OVER SEVEN YEARS?! Also, what is that Goblin-free Norman Osborn up to anyway?

Spider-Man will already be contending with the likes of Rhino in his new story arc, and more fearsome enemies will follow suit in addition to Hellgate. Whether Hellgate is the one pulling the strings or he’s simply a small part of a larger force that’s targeting Spider-Man, one thing remains clear: Spider-Man is in for the fight of a lifetime once Hellgate and his other rogues hit the scene.

Spider-Man’s Sinister Six May Be Gaining a Powerful New Member

Hellgate Will Keep Spider-Man On His Toes, Alongside Other Villains

The Sinister Six unites Spider-Man’s deadliest and most popular enemies, culminating in a dangerous team-up of foes who can push Peter Parker to his absolute limits. From Green Goblin to Doctor Octopus, these villains know how to get under Spider-Man’s skin, and Hellgate would make a solid addition to the all-star roster of rogues. With his intimidating design, he would fit right in alongside the classic villains who have long tormented Spider-Man, and he might even surpass many of them as a darker threat. Spider-Man is about to have his hands full as Hellgate’s debut – and his possible alliance with the Sinister Six – draws closer.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 will be available on April 9th, 2025 from Marvel Comics!
