The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #65, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Spider-Man just walked a mile in Death’s shoes, and it completely broke him.
Amazing Spider-Man #65 finds the titular hero going from one encounter with a demonic Scion of Cyttorak to another, as his victory over the infernal Callix led straight into a confrontation with the villain’s sister, Cyra. Surprisingly, Cyra doesn’t want to test Spider-Man’s strength or resilience, but rather his heart, all by forcing him to watch as the inevitable deaths of his loved ones play out right before his very eyes. Worse still, not even the presence of Death himself can make the torment stop, although Phil Coulson is always willing to lend one of his fellow heroes a shoulder to cry on.

Originally created for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson made his first appearance in 2008’s Iron Man as famously portrayed by Clark Gregg. A superhero fanboy turned tried-and-true powerhouse in his own right, Agent Coulson became a fast fan-favorite, so much so that his subsequent appearances in further MCU films gave way to the character’s leading role on the long-running Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. Throughout his time on the silver and small screens, Coulson maintained his status as a hero, something that can’t be said for his comic book counterpart.
While the Marvel Comics version of Agent Coulson shared many of the same attributes as the original, his overall trajectory veered wildly from his MCU counterpart’s. After losing his life during the events of 2015’s Secret Empire, Phil Coulson found himself subjected to the depths of Hell. There, he made a deal with the demon Mephisto, who bequeathed unto Coulson the power of the Pandemonium Cube, which he used to remake the Marvel Universe in his own twisted, jingoistic image. This kicked off the events of 2021’s Heroes Reborn, which ultimately led to the defeat of Coulson and his Squadron Supreme at the hands of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel May Have Just Spoiled the Ending of the Ultimate Universe
The Ultimates have just discovered what the future of their universe has in store for them, and there is nothing good to look forward to.
Following Coulson’s second end at the conclusion of Heroes Reborn, the character laid dormant for a short while before being resurrected by one of the latest additions to the overarching Marvel mythos – the Death Stone. This newly discovered Infinity Stone gives its wielding sway over death itself, effectively transforming them into Death as the figure is known in the pages of Marvel Comics. Since its introduction, the Death Stone has been locked in Thanos’ sights, although the Mad Titan is hardly the biggest threat currently being posed to Phil Coulson and his fellow members of the Infinity Watch.

Spider-Man
Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.
Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
