Spider-Man is now an agent of Doctor Doom, in a major character shake-up that no one in the Webslinger’s fandom could have predicted. The long-time Marvel villain is now Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, and his recruitment of Spider-Man for an all-new mission could lead to a major hero transformation for the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man #61 comes from the new creative team of Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness, and officially kicks off the “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” storyline, which will feature Spidey being recruited by Doom to save the world from an evil demi-god and his scions.

The preview depicts Spider-Man running into a bit of the old Parker luck while dealing with a forgettable villain, showing that no matter how fantastic the story may ultimately become, Kelly and McGuinnness understand the core virtues of Spider-Man.

The preview may show that the series’ new creative team understands what makes Spider-Man tick, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be willing to play around with the form. The “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” storyline sounds like it will be making a number of changes to Peter Parker for the time being, with the advanced solicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #61 stating:

The leader of Latveria has given Spider-Man a new, magic-powered suit and EIGHT EXTRA LIVES with which to save the world.

Marvel has already revealed what Spidey’s new suit will look like, a silver and red ensemble that allows the Web-Slinger to cast magical green webs.

Spider-Man’s going to need all the help he can get, as Doctor Doom gifts him his new magic outfit to take on the Scions of Cyttorak. Long-time Marvel fans will recognize Cyttorak as the demon lord who gave the Juggernaut his unstoppable powers via his Crimson Gem. It is also a good thing that Spidey now has eight extra lives to help accomplish his mission, as it is currently unknown exactly how many Scions of Cyttorak he’ll be up against, and whether he will even facing Cyttorak himself, eventually.

Marvel Teases They Won’t Be

Ominously, Marvel’s solicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #61 also teases that Peter Parker’s eight mystically granted lives “won’t be enough” for his mission, setting the stage for a perilous, tense journey through the mystical side of the Marvel Universe for the publisher’s most stalwart hero, Spider-Man.The fact that this arc directly ties into Doctor Doom’s new paradigm is also crucial, as ever since he acquired the position of Sorcerer Supreme at the end of this year’s Blood Hunt, fans have been eager to know where Doctor Doom’s story is heading.

After 62 Years, Marvel Reveals the Hidden Tactic Doctor Doom Used to Become Marvel’s Smartest Villain

Doctor Doom is often known as the master planner of the Marvel Universe – but apparently, he’s not thinking up his schemes all on his own after all.

In addition to setting Peter Parker on his own mission for “8 Deaths of Spider-Man,” Doom’s story will continue in next year’s crossover One World Under Doom, which launches next January in Fantastic Four #28, before continuing in February with The Rise of Emperor Doom #1. How this all ties with the “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” remains to be determined, so fans will have to add Amazing Spider-Man to their pull-list to keep up with Doctor Doom’s current position in the Marvel Universe.

Amazing Spider-Man #61 will be available November 13, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
