Summary
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse makes Marvel history as the movie has been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards – a first for Marvel projects. While the superhero genre faced its challenges in 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the few films to succeed both critically and financially. While the wait for the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse isn’t over, the love for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is continuing to be celebrated in 2024.
As the Oscars are coming up, the Academy Awards nominations have been announced, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the handful of comic book films to be included. While they only landed one nomination, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is one of five movies to be up for best Animated Feature Film.
The acclaimed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, starring Miles Morales, joins The Boy and The Heron, Elemental, Nimona, and Robot Dreams. In a very poetic way, Jack Quaid, who voiced Peter Parker from Earth-65 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was part of announcing the Academy Awards 2024 nominations.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – 80 Easter Eggs & Marvel References
Across the Spider-Verse features several Easter eggs along with a literal army of different versions of Spider-Man from the original comics and more.
Marvel has a reasonably long Oscars history, but only in a few select categories. Since 2009, Visual Effects has been a regular category for Marvel movies, as the Iron Man trilogy, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Doctor Strange have been among some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe projects to get nominated. In more recent years, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home, also got nominated for Visual Effects.
Black Panther was the first MCU movie to win not one but three Academy Awards in 2019 for Costume Design, Original Score, and Production Design. In 2023, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won for costume design, but it also made history as Angela Bassett was up for Supporting Actress for her performance as Queen Ramonda. As far as non-MCU Marvel movies go, Spider-Man 2, Big Hero 6, and also Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have each won an Oscar in Visual Effects and Best Animated Feature Film, respectively.
The only other Academy Awards 2024 nomination that Marvel landed was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Best Visual Effects. Given the massive work that went into Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it is no surprise that they landed such a massive nomination. The world will find out if Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wins best Animated Feature Film when the 96th Academy Awards airs on March 10 on ABC.
