Marvel’s newest Spider-Girl brings a refreshing energy to the Spider-Man corner of its universe, and the young hero is now going to make her mark in her own series. Raised as a villain, this is a Spider-character like readers have never seen before, and even though she’s sporting a familiar name, her journey is sure to surprise fans old and new.
Marvel have just announced Spider-Girl – written by Torunn Grønbekk with art by André Risso – an ongoing title, which will fully immerse the newest Webslinger into the Marvel Universe, after her successful debut in Spider-Boy last year.
The series will transplant the new Spider-Girl, Makawalu Akana, to New York City, where she’ll face off against classic Spider-Man foes and discover whether she’s got what it takes to be a hero. Marvel’s preview promises that she’ll battle classic Spidey enemy Vermin first, but that he’ll only be the first threat she’ll have to face.
Marvel’s New Spider-Girl Is An Instant Hit; She Has Already Earned Her Own Solo Series
Spider-Girl #1 – Written By Torunn Grønbekk; Art By André Risso; Available June 11, 2025 From Marvel Comics
First appearing as a supporting character in Spider-Boy #11 – written by Dan Slott, with art by Paco Medina – Makawalu is a mutant with the ability to copy other people’s skills. Trained as an assassin by Bullseye as ‘Funhouse’, she became obsessed with beating the titular Spider-Boy after copying his Spider-powers; for a currently unexplained reason, her adoption of these powers became permanent. She then took on the title Spider-Girl to become Spider-Boy’s rival, but when Bullseye betrayed her, she teamed up with Spider-Boy, and now faces an uncertain future.
Spider-Girl is too good a moniker to waste, and Makawalu is now the latest character to take the mantle.
This is far from the first character to name herself Spider-Girl, but the most famous version of the character isn’t even from the main Marvel Universe. First appearing in What If…? #105– written by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz – Mayday Parker is the alternate daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane. The character became a fan-favorite, spinning into her own Spider-Girl series and becoming the cornerstone of the ‘MC2’ universe. However, with MC2 no longer being a mainstream concern, Spider-Girl is too good a moniker to waste, and Makawalu is now the latest character to take the mantle.
Spider-Girl’s Brief Tenure As A Villain Gives Her A New Perspective On “Power & Responsibility”
An Exciting Dynamic For Marvel’s Latest Series
One exciting thing about this series is how it can explore great power coming with great responsibility. Sure, Peter Parker was selfish when he first gained his Spider-powers, but was never a villain. Spider-Girl will get to explore a hero who has done bad things with their power and is only now discovering responsibility; Makawalu was only a kid when Bullseye turned her towards crime, but she surely feels responsible for what she did. Like all the best versions of Spider-Man, Spider-Girl’s heroic journey begins with a large amount of guilt, but it is what she does next that will define her.
