Avengers
#151 cover with Disney characters in classic hero garb.
Disney steps into the realm of the Avengers with a fantastic recreation of a classic comic cover, transforming Mickey Mouse into Captain America, Minnie Mouse into Iron Man, and the beloved Goofy into Thor! This delightful crossover is part of Marvel’s celebration of the 60-year anniversary of the Avengers and X-Men, with these Disney-inspired What If….? variant covers set to adorn select issues of upcoming Amazing Spider-Man releases.
On September 11, 2024, fans will have the chance to grab their own copy of Nico Picone’s variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #53, featuring Goofy, Mickey, and Minnie Mouse. This variant cover is a Disney-inspired recreation of the Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man cover art for Avengers #151 (1976) by Gerry Conway, Jim Shooter, Steve Englehart, George Perez, John Tartaglione, and Don Warfield.
This cover iconically featured the trio of Avengers, with Captain America taking the lead as they addressed other fellow members of the superhero team. Picone’s recreation does a fantastic job of melding the original cover with Disney.
Thor, Iron Man & Captain America All Represent Each Other’s Fathers
The tumultuous love/hate relationship between Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, is explained because they all represent each other’s fathers.
Goofy, Mickey, and Minnie Mouse Suit Up as the Avengers in Variant Cover for Amazing Spider-Man
Picone’s variant cover mirrors the core elements of Avengers #151, with Mickey flanked by Minnie and Goofy, akin to Captain America being flanked by Iron Man and Thor in the original artwork. Picone even includes Captain America’s iconic tagline featured on the cover, “Face front, Avengers! The battle’s about to begin!” Additionally, Picone outfits the trio of Disney characters in the classic costumes of their Avenger counterparts, with Goofy wielding Mjölnir and sporting Thor’s winged helmet and red cape. Likewise, Mickey dons Steve’s Captain America suit that was prominently featured in the 70s.
Additionally, Minnie Mouse is outfitted in Tony Stark’s iconic suit of armor. However, her costume bears a character-specific twist. Instead of wearing the typical Iron Man mask, Minnie’s signature bow receives an Iron Man makeover, sporting a metallic gold-like appearance. What makes this design choice even more fitting is that Minnie’s bow resembles the Iron Man-inspired Minnie Ears sold at Disney theme parks, bringing a touch of reality to the artwork. Another notable detail about Picone’s variant cover is the subtle inclusion of Pluto as Yellowjacket and Daisy Duck as Scarlet Witch.
Donald Duck Becomes Avengers’ Vision in Disney What If…? Variant Cover
Certainly, no Disney character gathering would be complete without the inclusion of Donald Duck, who, in this variant cover, assumes the role of Vision. Throughout 2024, Donald Duck has been a central figure in the Disney What If…? variant covers, appearing as various characters such as Ant-Man, Cyclops, and even Wolverine. With Donald Duck being the most frequently featured character on these variant covers so far, it will be intriguing to see which other Avengers and X-Men roles he, along with Goofy, Minnie, and Mickey Mouse, will embody in future covers.
