I consider myself a fan of the Avengers, but they just made an embarrassing mistake that’s caused me to doubt whether they’re as great as I thought they were. While Marvel’s heroes usually have a clear idea of the threats they’re up against, they’ve now made the mistake of trusting a powerful villain, which has resulted in innocent deaths they could have easily prevented.
In a preview for The Avengers #24 by Jed MacKay and Farid Karami, the Avengers are forced to watch in horror as Kang the Conqueror unleashes a fleet of ships upon the Grandmaster’s Speculatorium. Captain Marvel asks if he’d really let thousands die to “prove a point”, and Kang simply replies, “Without a second thought. Without even a first.”
Kang’s actions are deplorable, but what stands out to me about this moment is how the heroes seem genuinely stunned by his eagerness to kill. The Avengers should know what they’re dealing with by now, yet their misplaced trust in Kang has put lives on the line.
I Can’t Believe The Avengers Are Shocked by Kang the Conqueror’s Actions
Did The Avengers Seriously Think Kang Wouldn’t Kill Innocent People?
Kang has actually been working with the Avengers throughout MacKay’s run, forming a tentative alliance with them to inform them of events to come in their future that only he could foresee. That is, until The Avengers #10, in which Kang was attacked by fellow time traveler Myraddin and decided that their allegiance had failed. He has now become an adversary to the Avengers once more, and they had hoped to outsmart him by stealing one of his possessions from the Grandmaster. Clearly, Kang has been one step ahead of the heroes all along, and I’m disappointed by how surprised they are about it.
Captain Marvel and her Avengers teammates have made a huge mistake in underestimating Kang the Conqueror, and that mistake will cost countless lives.
While the Avengers did reluctantly accept Kang’s help earlier, I can’t wrap my head around why they’re so shocked by his mass murder. They never should have trusted him to begin with, despite his predictions helping them, because of his extensive history as a deadly villain who’s never hesitated to take lives before. They should have seen this betrayal coming from miles away, honestly. Captain Marvel and her Avengers teammates have made a huge mistake in underestimating Kang the Conqueror, and that mistake will cost countless lives, when they should have known better than to doubt how far he’s willing to go.
Kang the Conqueror Can’t Be Trusted, So How Did The Avengers Fall For It?
The Avengers Just Showed How Incompetent They Can Be
The Avengers’ shock about Kang the Conqueror’s willingness to let innocents perish suggests that they don’t understand what they’re up against. In Kurt Busiek and Alan Davis’ The Kang Dynasty, the titular villain conquered the entire planet, which resulted in an immeasurable number of deaths. Kang even created labor camps and punished anyone who fled them with brutal deaths, proving just how monstrous he can be when given power. Having experienced firsthand the atrocities that Kang could commit, the Avengers should have predicted that crossing him could lead to him creating more casualties.

Marvel Is Poised to Kill an Original Avenger, But I’m Begging Them Not To
The death of a founding Avenger has been teased in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, but we’re among the fans desperately hoping it isn’t true.
Unfortunately, the reality is that the Avengers must have thought they truly had the upper hand over Kang. If they’d reached whatever mysterious possession he was after first and procured it successfully, then they might have been able to bypass the fatal consequences of his arrival by having leverage. Regardless, I think it’s foolish for the Avengers to not plan for an outcome like this if Kang is involved. The heroes’ failure to account for Kang having no regard for other lives – something that could have been anticipated – leads me to question whether they should be recognized as “heroes” at all.
The Avengers Should Be Smarter Than This, And I’m Disappointed
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Aren’t As Perceptive As They Should Be
The Avengers have long been recognized as one of Marvel’s top super-teams, hence their moniker as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”. With that being said, their oversight of Kang is no small misstep, and it shows how inept they can be in spite of their reputation. The Avengers have a duty to protect people, and that mission has fallen flat thanks to their own incompetence. The team houses some of Marvel’s smartest minds and strongest fighters, yet they have all let Kang get away with murder once again. As much as I love the Avengers, it’s time to admit that they’re chumps, not heroes.
