San Diego Comic-Con to stay in San Diego

TokyoPop donates to help those impacted by LA wildfires.

Marvel Rivals gets a print comic.

This is Comic Book Club News for January 21, 2025.

San Diego Comic-Con will be staying in San Diego, at least through 2027.

Per Indie San Diego, the annual pop culture convention technically known as Comic-Con International has committed to staying in the city that has played host to the con for the past 50 years. This extends the deal with the city one year, as the con had previously committed through 2026.

Why would Comic-Con even consider a move from San Diego? Well, two reasons. The first is the spiraling price of hotel rooms, which are already insanely high through Comic-Con’s approved hotel blocks, and even higher without the discount. The second? the San Diego Convention Center caps out at 135,000 attendees. As other cons like New York Comic Con have grown to welcome well over 200,000 attendees, what used to be the biggest convention in the United States is likely looking for options to grow.

That said, there are now no plans to move from San Diego… At least until 2028.

Manga publisher TokyoPop has contributed $10,000 to BINC, the Book Industry Charitable Fund, to help those in the book and comics industry impacted by the ongoing LA fires.

Per a press release from the publisher, Binc will match donations up to $55,000 through a form on their website, of which this $10k will play a part.

Said TokyoPop founder Stu Levy, “I’ve been an Angeleno since birth, so this particular tragedy has hit home like no other. TOKYOPOP literally lives and breathes this town, and there is
no one we trust more than Binc to deploy the resources to help our industry’s local shops and
colleagues. As our hearts go out to those affected by the fires, we are immensely grateful to
everyone who has contributed to this mission-critical community effort.”

You can donate yourself to help those impacted at bincfoundation.org.

Good news! You no longer have to wait for hours and keep reloading the ink while you print out your latest session of Marvel Rivals: the hit PVP shooter is coming to Marvel Comics with a special one-shot.

Collecting all six issues of the Marvel Unlimited Marvel Rivals Infinity Comic, written by Paul Allor with art by Luca Claretti, the comic sets up the story of the hit game and depicts, per PR from the publisher, “an epic battle between two squads of members pulled from the original roster of playable characters including iconic heroes like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine along with breakout stars like Luna Snow and Jeff the Land Shark! Combining the breakneck action of the game with classic Marvel Comics storytelling, it’s a must-have for fans who wish to dive deeper into the thrilling world of Marvel Rivals!”

If you’ve never played Marvel Rivals and are wondering what the deal is, here’s the deal: in Tokyo 2099, a time rift has disrupted the Web of Life and Destiny. With the world’s heroes divided on how to deal with it, it’s down to Peni Parker versus Spider-Man for the fate of the planet. Peni’s group wants to plug the Web into Cyberspace. Spider-Man’s group wants to use Chronovium to strengthen the web. Which group will win? Well, it’s an ongoing game so probably neither.

The Marvel Rivals comic hits stores on April 2.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And time to switch over to printing out Fortnite, like I usually do.
