On X, Reynolds championed the upcoming project, writing “This” with an arrow pointing to Kubert’s cover, following up with a ‘mind blown’ emoji. The Healing Factor Heroes Will Experience Intense “Body Horror”

Wolverine and Deadpool have a long history in Marvel Comics, where the two indestructible heroes have been fierce enemies and stalwart allies. Logan at least respects Deadpool’s abilities as one of Marvel’s most skilled combatants, but a long list of grudges – including Deadpool crushing him under a falling piano – mean that the two don’t exactly enjoy each other’s company. Unfortunately, as the mysterious Delta strikes, it appears they’ll have to put aside their personal animosity if they’re going to survive “World War III.” Speaking about the project to Marvel, Joe Kelly says:

There were so many factors that made me say yes to writing this book. Adam Kubert was number one. I worked with Adam during my early Marvel career and have been a fan of his ever since – both as an artist and a human. So, working with him again? No brainer, yes please.

The second reason was Wolverine. As much as this is a buddy-book, Logan is the entry point to the story, which gave me a chance to explore this character I love. His voice, his perspective on the world, all of it gave me a unique way to approach an epic team-up…

And then, big number three… there’s the body horror. Deadpool and Wolverine together allow for a bloody playground of a story. A tale of self-examination and introspection as told through some seriously jaw-dropping nastiness thanks to Adam’s deft hands. It’s a dark, funny, messy ride I hope everyone enjoys as much as I do.

The promise of body horror shouldn’t be a surprise in a story starring two heroes who can heal from any injury – nor one in which two trained killer take a disturbing amount of joy in tearing each other to pieces. However, the promise of a change to Wolverine and Deadpool’s relationship is intriguing – fans will be reminded of Kubert and Jason Aaron’s Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine, which saw the titular heroes involtunarily hurled through time, testing their friendship and ultimately leaving them closer than ever before.

Comic fans have often expressed frustration that Marvel doesn’t take advantage of its movies to champion comics more visibly, especially when there are so many volumes that can be perfectly recommended alongside each cinematic release. In the case of Deadpool and Wolverine, however, Marvel is doing it right, as major star Ryan Reynolds lets fans know that WWIII is about to break out for their favorite characters.
