Fans anticipate a new interpretation of Sandman and other villains in Amazon’s Spider-Man: Noir series.

Spider-Man: Noir follows an alternate version of the Marvel Comics character, and at least one familiar villain from the wall-crawler’s Rogue’s Gallery may appear in the Amazon TV series.

Spider-Man Noir is based on the character of the same name from Marvel’s Noir universe. Played by Nicolas Cage, who previously voiced another version of the character in Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this new live-action incarnation of Spider-Man Noir is an aging detective private investigator and superhero living in an alternate 1930s New York City, much like his comic book counterpart.

Recent Spider-Man Noir set photos showcased a comic-accurate costume, and videos from the same location demonstrated how well the outfit looks in action. In response to the set photos and videos, reputable scooper Daniel Richtman shared exciting details about one of the foes Spider-Man Noir will face in the TV show. “I heard this show is going to be huge. I mean he’s fighting Sandman in episode 1!” Richtman wrote, reiterating news he broke in July 2024.

If Richtman’s scoop is correct, the Spider-Man: Noir TV show’s version of Sandman will likely share similarities with his Earth-90214 comic book counterpart. In the comics, the Noir universe version of Sandman/Flint Marko is a henchman to the ruthless crime boss named Crime Master. Unlike the main Sandman, the Noir universe version does not possess sand powers, but he is capable of altering his internal physiology and, according to Spider-Man, has granite-like skin. This Sandman earned his nickname for brutally killing his victims with his fists.

Sandman is one of the most popular Spider-Man villains. He’s been a frequent foe in Spider-Man TV shows and video games, but his most famous non-comic book appearance is arguably the primary antagonist in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Thomas Haden Church portrayed Sandman for Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, and he voiced the role 14 years later in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Of course, Spider-Man: Noir is expected to feature many villains. It remains to be seen how the Spider-Man Noir TV show will adapt Sandman, but fans are excited to see a new interpretation of this iconic Marvel foe. The aforementioned comic-accurate Spider-Man Noir outfit alone was enough to instill confidence. Add Cage, who is famous for his excellent and often eccentric performances, and Amazon’s Spider-Man Noir could be a refreshing entry into the superhero genre. With recent duds like Joker 2, Hollywood is hoping for signs that superhero fatigue hasn’t set in for good (beyond Deadpool and Wolverine‘s box office success).

Spider-Man: Noir will debut on MGM+.
