Rumor: Sony Could Be Creating More Problems for MCU’s Spider-Man

Sony may be stirring up issues for Marvel and the future of Spider-Man yet again, as reports suggest the studio is blocking certain villains from appearing in the MCU.

Three years have passed since the last Spider-Man movie, and there is still no sign of a fourth. Marvel is already grappling with a number of issues, and now another one has surfaced. This latest problem appears to stem from Sony, potentially complicating the future of Spider-Man in the MCU.

A new rumor from industry insider Daniel Richtman suggests that Sony is once again creating obstacles for MCU’s Spider-Man. According to Richtman, any villains featured in Sony’s Spider-Man movies or its Spider-Man Universe, including those in Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, are off-limits for the MCU. If true, this would mean that villains from Sony’s movies are restricted from appearing in Marvel’s projects, leaving “not many” options for future Spider-Man movies.

It is well known that Sony and Marvel have not always seen eye to eye, and their ongoing negotiations could pose serious risks for the MCU if they go awry. The latest rumor suggests that iconic Spider-Man villains could be off-limits to Marvel, and while fans are unsure whether to believe it, the implications are significant. If true, beloved villains like Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus may not make their MCU debut anytime soon, dashing the hopes of those eager to see Marvel’s take on these characters. However, this does not mean all hope is lost. Marvel still has access to a vast library of villains from Spider-Man‘s extensive comic book history, meaning they have plenty of options to explore. Additionally, the possibility of future crossovers has not been ruled out – especially after the immense popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought some of these villains to the big screen in a way that thrilled audiences.

Marvel’s Spider-Man movies have already introduced a range of iconic villains, including Vulture, Shocker, Scorpion, and Mysterio. No Way Home expanded the roster even further, with Spider-Man crossing paths with Sony’s Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, the Lizard, and Electro. If the rumor is accurate, characters like Rhino, Calypso, Chameleon, and Kraven – who have already been teased in Sony’s Kraven the Hunter trailers – would be next on the off-the-table list for Marvel’s Spider-Man. This leaves Marvel with the pressing question: who will step up as the next big villain in Spider-Man 4? Previous rumors have indicated that Kingpin might emerge as the next major villain for Spider-Man, a development that has excited many fans who are eager to see the iconic crime lord take on the web-slinger. At the same time, others are still holding out hope for Venom’s return. Although Venom may not serve as the primary antagonist, recent theories suggest he could still play a significant role in the story. At this stage, Sony had already used many of the most well-known villains from Spider-Man‘s comic book history. This means Marvel will need to get more creative in selecting their next antagonist for future movies.
