The reason is believed to be the Academy’s hesitation towards embracing more movies from the superhero genre. The Dark Knight dominated the 2008-09 award season and landed multiple nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger.

While no specific claim had been made, the Academy may have denied such a nomination without realizing Downey Jr’s performance’s influence on the superhero genre’s success in mainstream cinema. However, the actor still managed to get recognition from the Academy for another movie, Tropic Thunder. He landed the nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the 2008 comedy film.

While discussing Martin Scorsese’s criticism regarding Marvel movies on The Howard Stern Show, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that he did decline to campaign for an Oscar for his portrayal of Iron Man. He shared that he didn’t expect the Marvel Cinematic Universe to become this grand over the years.

When asked about being robbed of an Oscar for Iron Man, he said that there were some talks about the same, but he suggested not to continue it any further. “Doing [the Marvel movies] was their own reward. I don’t know that it’s time or if I am the guy… to have the Academy recognize,” he said in a conversation with Howard Stern. The actor has two Oscar nominations under his name for the 1992 film Chaplin and the 2008 film Tropic Thunder.
