The following contains major spoilers for Immortal Thor #23, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Immortal Thor is about to face off against a bigger god than he will ever become – and he knows it.

Immortal Thor #23 finds the titular hero and his Asgardian allies Skurge and Hermod staring down the threat of Kemur. This towering beast is no mere minotaur, but another of the Elder Gods who have risen up to pose a threat unlike any other to Asgard, Midgard, and every realm in between. Worse still, Thor is perfectly aware of just how outmatched he truly is, just as he is perfectly aware that running away from this fight is simply not an option.

Kemur, introduced in the previous issue, is one of the Elder Gods now known as the Utgard Gods. These ancient entities are some of the only survivors of the Godwar, during which the Elder Gods battled one another for complete and total control, only for the emergence of the first of the New Gods, Atum, to present an even more pressing concern. Although Atum and the Demogorge were responsible for annihilating nearly all of the Elder Gods, the Utgard Gods found a refuge in the nether-plane crafted by The-One-Who-Cannot-Be-Named, aka the Utgard-Loki, where they resided in silence for millennia.

In the modern day, the Utgard Gods were given a chance to step foot outside of their tiny corner of the Marvel Universe, with Toranos, the Utgard-Thor, being the first to make their presence known. Although Toranos made his debut as an abject villain, he was anything but when he met his untimely end. Not only was Toranos eventually defeated by Thor, but he was also imbued with a portion of the God of Thunder’s compassion, an emotion that was previously unknown to the Elder God. When Toranos pleaded with his fellow Utgard Gods to let their rage and lust for vengeance go, he was crucified to his own towering wheel, leaving him to be put out of his misery by Thor.

Wolverine’s Old Enemies Keep Proving That They’ll Never Learn The Most Important Lesson

Wolverine is set for another rematch with some of his oldest enemies, and no matter how many times they lose, they will never learn to just let it go.

While it was Kemur who took part in crucifying Toranos and who now stands as the most immediate threat to the God of Thunder, he is far from the biggest threat that Thor has to worry about. Apart from Kemur, there are the Elder Gods Nrgl and Mejed, both of whom have more than proven their might already. There is also the Utgard Loki himself, an unknowable, unnamable entity who is capable of weaponizing the fourth wall itself against his foes, and has done so on more than one occasion throughout Thor’s latest epic.
