Warning: contains spoilers for Immortal Thor #10!

The MCU made pop culture icons out of many Marvel characters, but now it comes to light that one may not be an A-lister after all. Since its debut in 2008, the MCU has thrilled fans worldwide and introduced characters such as Thor, Iron Man and Captain America to the mainstream. Now, in Immortal Thor #10, Odinson’s status as an MCU icon is thrown into question.

Immortal Thor #10 is written by Al Ewing and drawn by Carlos Magno. Roxxon and the Enchantress have conspired to create their own version of Thor, one they can control. They send their fake Thunder God to fight the real deal. The two trade blows and lightning bolts, neither getting the upper hand. The fake Thor, revealed to be the Keep, tells the real Thor that he is “out of style, out of date, out of touch…and clearly not a priority for the company.”

Not content to stop there, he continues to egg Thor on with meta-infused insults.

Immortal Thor Calls Out the MCU Version of the Character

Roxxon’s Thor Might As Well as Be Chris Hemsworth

In this issue, Ewing and Magno are calling out the corporatization of the media, and how it impacts art. This has been a recurring theme in Immortal Thor since its launch. Roxxon, one of the premiere “evil” corporations in the Marvel Universe, has sought a hero they can control. The Enchantress came to Roxxon CEO Dario Agger with the idea to trap Thor, and create a copy. In the previous issue, Thor waded into the “art versus content” debate, and the events of this issue take this exploration even further.

In this analogy, the fake Thor then is the “Disney-fied” version, torn down, ruined by capitalism and forced into servitude.

The fake Thor created by Roxxon in this issue bears a strong resemblance to the MCU incarnation of the character, played by Chris Hemsworth. His outfit matches the darker tones of Thor’s live-action counterpart. He also has short hair, much like Thor sported in Ragnarök. The fake Thor fancies himself a more modern take on the character, one aligning with Roxxon’s values. This Thor is a “cooler” version of the Odinson, one more palpable to a mass audience. In this analogy, the fake Thor then is the “Disney-fied” version, torn down, ruined by capitalism and forced into servitude.

The Real Thor May Not Be an A-Lister At All

During his fight with the real Thor, the Keep kept the meta-insults going. He tells Thor to go back to Asgard, sit on his throne and “grow fat in his retirement.” This last statement is an obvious shout-out to Thor in Avengers: Endgame. The fake, MCU-friendly Thor tells the real one he is a relic of another age, and he needs to go. The Keep’s diatribe seems like an indictment of Thor, saying that despite his status as an MCU heavy-hitter, he is not actually worthy of it, and does not belong on the A-list.
