Insomniac could pay tribute to this storyline and outfit through a new costume unlock in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
Marvel’s Spider-Man has consistently been on the cutting edge of superhero games ever since its inception. The series puts gamers in the shoes of its characters to a degree that is nearly infamous at this point. The ability to swap out Spider-Man’s costume has been a key feature of the games, and a recent addition to Marvel Comics lore may offer the perfect inspiration for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
Many major Marvel heroes are undergoing some updates in their respective comic runs right now, as indicated by the slew of announcements at San Diego Comic Con. Among these latest lore additions is an upcoming Spider-Man crossover, with the wall crawler getting a brand-new costume from one of Marvel’s greatest villains: Doctor Doom.
Doc Ock Shouldn’t Be the Only Returning Villain from the First Game in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3
The next Spider-Man game has some big threats in store for Peter and Miles, and it has an opportunity to bring absent villains out of the shadows.
Spider-Man Comics Are Undergoing a Seismic Shift
Several upcoming projects drew a lot of excitement during one of Marvel’s panels at SDCC 2024, appropriately titled “Next Big Thing”. Comic book writer Zeb Wells has been the head of the Amazing Spider-Man comic line for quite some time now, but Wells will be stepping down later this year after providing a conclusion to a run that has had its fair share of ups and downs.
Upon the conclusion of Wells’ run, a new team will take over, beginning their time on Amazing Spider-Man with the newly announced “8 Deaths of Spider-Man”. 8 Deaths of Spider-Man won’t begin until November 2024, but there are a few key aspects that are known already. First and foremost, Doctor Doom is front and center as the new Sorcerer Supreme, and is sure to shake up the Marvel Universe in a number of ways.
Doctor Doom Provides Spider-Man with an Updated Costume
Spider-Man is receiving a new costume designed by Doctor Doom himself, and seems to be doing the mastermind’s bidding. Doctor Doom is just about the last person many fans may have expected to work together with any Marvel hero. Likewise, Spider-Man accepting the help of someone so infamous was previously unthinkable.
Spider-Man is a hero who prefers to stay in his own lane more than anything, though the interpretation featured in Marvel’s Spider-Man uses plenty of high-tech gadgets. Either way, Doctor Doom’s grand schemes are pretty far beyond the friendly neighborhood wheelhouse. Though it is true that Spider-Man has had a few major benefactors over the years, Docotor Doom’s new role ensures that this upcoming crossover is truly shocking. After all, Spider-Man has tight-knit bonds with The Fantastic Four unmatched by nearly any other character in Marvel Comics. While he may share a mutual respect with plenty of other heroes, characters like the Human Torch are practically family to Peter Parker.
Spider-Man’s Doctor Doom Costume Would Be Perfect for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3
Although this team up of sorts may be unexpected, it’s certainly a welcome surprise. Spider-Man and Doctor Doom are easily Marvel’s most iconic hero and villain respectively, so it’s not hard to imagine why the creative team at Marvel Comics thought this would be an interesting idea to explore. What’s even more exciting at this point is the implication it may have for outside media going forward.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is chock-full of unique costumes that embrace many dimensions of the character’s history, but it could always use some more fresh material. Spider-Man’s new costume is so exciting precisely because it’s so unexpected. Plain and simple, it’s a great design that makes use of the best aspects of both characters, and with Doom sure to become more popular than ever thanks to RDJ’s upcoming portrayal of the character in the MCU, making this costume attainable in the next game simply makes sense.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 created an awkward villain situation, one that could potentially be addressed by drawing inspiration from Spider-Man’s comic outings. As Insomniac looks to the comics to craft its next story, it likely won’t be thinking of making Doctor Doom a promiment character, but it could still acknowledge this new pairing through an unlockable costume. Spider-Man and Doctor Doom teaming up is bound to create a seismic shift in the status quo for both characters, and Spidey’s latest suit is the perfect symbol of this. Above all, it’s a great design that would fit right into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
