This March, Marvel Comics will release several highly anticipated titles, including the third issue of Steve Foxe and Ivan Florelli’s brand-new iteration of New Champions. After the new team’s introduction next week, the March issue will address the previous New Champions’ reaction to the usurpation of their moniker.
Marvel revealed in September that the new group will consist of Liberty, Hellrune, Moon Squire, and Cadet Marvel, with more heroes joining throughout the new series’ first arc. New Champions #3 will have our new heroes reckon with their decision to ride the wave of another’s legacy. The issue will feature Todd Nauck’s cover, which has members of both incarnations of the titular team on full display. Peach Momoko and Derrick Chew will also provide variant covers for New Champions #3.

Marvel’s New Champions #3 description reads, “CHAMPIONS VS. CHAMPIONS! The New Champions adopted a name that didn’t belong to them – and the previous Champions have something to say about that! But when an old enemy threatens both teams, they’ll have to work together to survive – or there might be no Champions left at all!”
Inspired by Marvel icons, the publisher featured members of the soon-to-be debut team in 2023’s New Champions Variant Cover series. Marvel’s synopsis for the inaugural New Champions issue reads, “What do four kids whose lives were derailed by Hydra, Scarlet Witch’s mysterious protégé, a cursed roller derby jammer, and a Wakandan runaway have in common? Not much! But when Hellrune’s mysterious powers activate to bring them together, they’ll have to learn how to work as a team quickly — or face the wrath of the Cult of Hela!”

New Champions Writer Teases An Avalanche of Guest Stars
In a recent interview with CBR, series writer Foxe addressed whether the upcoming New Champions will focus solely on the new characters or if fans could expect to see some familiar faces join the team. Foxe explained that the book will consist of characters Marvel has introduced over the past couple of years. Barring an unforeseen dictate from the publisher to add older characters like Deadpool to the mix, the writer wants “to spotlight and celebrate this generation on their own platform for this series.”
Foxe, however, teased the inclusion of a plethora of guest star characters for New Champions. “But expect guest stars galore. These kids are inspired by, and in some cases directly connected to, some of the most revered heroes in the Marvel Universe,” he said. “It would be a huge missed opportunity not to see them interact with their idols and explore those links. Just don’t be surprised if the connections aren’t always what you expect them to be.”
New Champions will debut its first issue on January 8, and New Champions #3 will hit comic book stores in March 2025.
