Marvel is about to give Nightwing and DC Comics some stiff competition in the butt market. In the past few years, Nightwing’s butt has become his defining feature. What was once an isolated incident of extremely detailed art design quickly became embraced by both the comic book community and DC Comics as a whole. The latter has readily leaned into the absurdity, drawing outright attention to his butt whenever possible.

As pointed out by Dexterto, Marvel Rivals’ second season quietly updated their character designs by giving each character bigger butts. This has been the case for both the male and female characters of Marvel in the game.

The notion seems to suggest that the popularity of Nightwing’s butt has inspired Marvel to plump up their heroes in the same manner. This does not necessarily mean Marvel is trying to rip off DC or bank on the financial success it’s generated for DC, but instead Marvel wants to reflect the current climate of the broad comic book community.

Marvel Rivals Season 2 Patch Officially Updated on April 11, 2025

With minor exceptions, nearly every character in Marvel Rivals has received a butt update. Marvel producing curvy character models for playable superheroes like Venom and Emma Frost has become a talking point among players, but Marvel certainly can’t be accused of sexism or inequality when the curvacious developments apply to both men and women characters, especially after this update. Traditionally, this wasn’t always the case in comics, as overly sexualized costumes and designs for women were once an industry-wide problem. The problem is slowly becoming unlearned and corrected, but both Marvel and DC Comics continue to have their issues.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead is no stranger to how Marvel treats overly powerful women, even going back to key heroes like Jean Grey and Scarlet Witch.

One way that comic book writers and artists have come to correct such a longstanding issue has been by flipping the script. The way in which women were once regularly objectified visually in comic books, the same is being done for male characters instead. Nightwing has become a recurring point of objectification by way of his butt. Dick Grayson’s backside has become his most iconic asset by consistently being drawn with great detail. DC leans into it by incorporating it into storylines, drawing attention to it in cover artwork, and even having pop culture legends like Beetlejuice spanking him.

The Positive Reception to Nightwing’s Butt is Influencing Butts Around the Comic Industry

Marvel Rivals Might Have Been Influenced by Reactions to Nightwing

Even Superman’s getting in on Nightwing’s butt action. It’s hard not to think that Marvel Rivals‘ patch update regarding butts may have been at least influenced by social media’s reaction to Nightwing’s butt. Whereas the trope of sexualizing women in comics has been met with outrage, the reception to Nightwing’s butt is largely positive. It showcases a shift in comic book culture and community in which fans love to see the tables turn. Everyone gets a kick out of the over-the-top lunacy in which DC incorporates Nightwing’s butt, and now, Marvel embraces that shift by adding to the butt conversation.
