Marvel Comics, known for its diverse cast of heroes, is introducing a groundbreaking new character set to resonate with millions worldwide. Dyasonic, the latest addition to the Marvel universe, is not just another superhero; she is a high school teenager living with type 1 diabetes, bringing much-needed representation of a chronic illness that affects countless lives.

Her story, featured in the new Marvel comic Dyasonic: Sound of Strength, was developed through a unique collaboration between Marvel and Insulet Corporation, the company behind the tubeless insulin pump, Omnipod.

Written by Paul Allor, who lives with diabetes, and with art that vividly brings her journey to life, the comic aims to empower and validate those navigating the complexities of type 1 diabetes, especially a younger audience. Dyasonic’s journey promises to be a powerful way to understand and connect within the diabetes community and beyond.

A Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment Through Technology

Dyasonic: Sound Of Strength, Written By Paul Allor

Omnya, the ordinary teenager who becomes Dyasonic, embodies the everyday struggles faced by those with type 1 diabetes. Dyasonic: Sound of Strength shows her initial challenges with managing her condition, paying particular attention to how her physical health also affects mental health and decision-making, from calculating insulin doses to monitoring blood glucose levels. Omnya’s journey takes a turn when she embraces the Omnipod 5 insulin pump after consulting with her endocrinologist in a moment that opens her eyes, turning her perceived weakness into an unexpected source of strength.

Marvel just transformed the origin of the Marvel Universe, revealing its most important hero is linked to everything from the Avengers to the X-Men.

The story delves into Omnya’s battle with self-doubt and her slow realization that her diabetes doesn’t define her; instead, it’s a part of what makes her uniquely strong. This internal shift sends her on the path to becoming Dyasonic, a hero whose powers are directly linked to her personal experiences. Dyasonic: Sound of Strength emphasizes that living with a chronic condition is inherently tied with identity and doesn’t stop a person’s potential to become extraordinary. Omnya’s story is a powerful message with the goal of making people with diabetes feel seen, understood, and genuinely represented in popular culture.

The Importance Of Authentic Representation On Combating Stigma

The Diabetes Community Is Woefully Underrepresented In Popular Culture

The creation of Dyasonic is more timely than ever, giving much-needed representation to the diabetes community. A U.S. survey conducted by Insulet revealed that a striking 94 percent of people with type 1 diabetes believe it’s important to see their condition accurately represented in culture and society. However, a disheartening 51 percent reported rarely seeing any representation in the year prior to the survey. This disconnect makes Dyasonic’s story all the more important, as mainstream popular culture discourse and education can play a part in bridging the gap to create a more inclusive and understanding society.

By introducing a Marvel hero who openly lives and thrives with her type 1 diabetes, Dyasonic: Sound of Strength confronts stigmas the diabetes community faces. The comic’s relatable story, built with care by writer Paul Allor’s personal experience, aims to normalize the condition, spark important conversations about management and support, and ultimately shape a better future for a more informed community.

This collaboration between Insulet and Marvel is a beautiful example of the powerful role that storytelling plays in building empathy and connection. Insulet is further committing to this mission by partnering with Children with Diabetes, offering scholarships for families to attend future Friends For Life Orlando conferences, and launching an online campaign to rally support. Dyasonic: Sound of Strength is more than just another Marvel comic; it’s a beacon of hope and validation for millions.
