Even without the release of Marvel’s Wolverine, it’s safe to say that it’s been an amazing year for Wolverine fans. The famous mutant has finally reached his milestone 50th birthday, and Marvel has decided to go all out. From comics, to movies, to collectibles, Marvel has taken the opportunity to show its appreciation and commitment to Wolverine. Insomniac Games’ project, however, seems to have been left behind in all the celebrations.
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s becoming abundantly clear that the highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine game, set for release on PlayStation 5, will not be making an appearance. This is surely disappointing for fans, not only as it continues the long wait for news on the title’s development following its initial reveal in 2021, but 2024 served as the perfect opportunity for the game to showcase the ambitious future planned for Wolverine. Despite this, hope is not entirely lost, as another milestone on the horizon could mean Marvel’s Wolverine can shine the much-deserved spotlight on Logan once more.
2024 Celebrated Wolverine’s 50th Anniversary
Fans Had A Lot Of Content To Delve Into
Much of 2024 was spent by Marvel reiterating the impact Wolverine has made. This was largely focused on comics, with a huge influx of Wolverine stories for fans to delve into. The previous run of the ongoing Wolverine series came to an end with the explosive Sabretooth War arc, pitting Logan against his arch-rival in a spectacular showdown, followed by a relaunch under the helm of acclaimed writer Saladin Ahmed. This doesn’t even include the slew of limited series on offer, including Wolverine: Revenge, which brought all the bloody violence fans come to expect in one action-packed story.
Beyond the new comic ventures, Marvel also took the opportunity to remind fans of the mutant’s incredible history. The Marvel Legends series gained a variety of new figures showcasing iconic moments throughout Wolverine’s comics run. And there’s no forgetting the enormous success of Deadpool & Wolverine, bringing back fan-favorite Hugh Jackman in a loving tribute to the 20th Century Fox series of X-Men films that remain as such a huge part of the character’s history.
Marvel’s Wolverine Game Animator Shares Photo Teasing Mocap Action
Mike Yosh, the Lead Animator on the Marvel’s Wolverine game from Insomniac Games, recently shared an image hinting at the start of mocap work.
Wolverine‘s 50th Anniversary is clearly more than just a celebration. It’s an opportunity for Marvel to truly recognize the importance of the character’s history, and the reasons why Logan remains so beloved today. The success of this endeavor would have been the perfect time for Marvel’s Wolverine to make an appearance, as its popularity would surely have been bolstered by all the promotion surrounding Logan. Alas, the game has yet to be shown off in any capacity, making its silence during this special period all the more disappointing.
Wolverine’s 400th Issue Should Release In 2025
A New Opportunity Arises For The Game To Join The Celebrations
Luckily, there’s still a chance for Marvel’s Wolverine to join the celebrations, as yet another milestone steadily approaches. The ongoing Wolverine comic series is still going strong, with its latest issue bringing the series to 394 issues (when using Marvel’s alternative legacy issue numbering). If Marvel continues with their monthly release plan, this means that the series will reach its milestone 400th issue in May 2025. It’s uncommon for ongoing comics series to go on for such a lengthy period of time, making a milestone like Wolverine‘s worthy of celebration.
At the moment, plans have yet to be revealed by Marvel regarding what the milestone issue will entail, and there could be a lot riding on this release. The consistent support and appreciation Wolverine has been shown is nothing short of fantastic, and there will surely be a desire from Marvel to keep that momentum as it heads into the future. As the last piece of the year-long celebration, the 400th issue bears a huge responsibility to keep interest in the Wolverine series sky-high.
This would be a perfect opportunity for Insomniac’s own take on the character to finally make an appearance. Releasing Wolverine‘s 400th issue alongside such a highly-anticipated title will surely spike interest in the character once again. Celebrations like Wolverine‘s anniversary are worthy of a grand finale, and the release of Marvel’s Wolverine would serve as not only a great way to cap off a monumental year for the character, but as the perfect catalyst to maintain that same momentum as Logan heads into the future.
Insomniac’s Adaptation Is A Showcase Of The Character’s Bright Future
Releasing Marvel’s Wolverine in May 2025 would serve as the perfect end to the celebrations, as it contrasts with a lot of the other offerings over the past year. Many events, including the Marvel Legends figures and Deadpool & Wolverine, ended up taking a more retrospective approach, highlighting moments in Logan’s lengthy history that have come to define the character. While it’s been fantastic for fans to take a trip down memory lane, the question still remains about how Wolverine will be handled heading into the future.
Insomniac’s Wolverine project is the perfect answer to this question. The title would serve as an example of the many new and fresh adaptations of the character that would provide a variety of new experiences for even the most die-hard Wolverine fans. The success of Insomniac’s own Spider-Man series is proof that the developers are willing to provide new, fresh takes on Marvel’s most iconic superheroes while staying true to what makes said hero so special.
I’m Worried Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Cut Wolverine Feature Is A Huge Missed Opportunity
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was an evolution over its predecessors in many ways, but cutting one feature could have robbed us of a cool crossover.
As a matter of fact, Spider-Man shows how Insomniac has already adopted this release strategy previously. Spider-Man 2‘s release in 2023 comes in the same year as the 60th anniversary of the Web-Slinger’s first ongoing comic series, The Amazing Spider-Man. The game not only capped off a great year for Spider-Man that also included a stellar movie release with Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, but Spider-Man 2 took great strides to expand Insomniac’s universe, crafting an ambitious path for potential future entries to go down.
Ultimately, the decision surrounding the release of Marvel’s Wolverine comes down to Insomniac itself. The continued radio silence regarding the title’s development means time is running out to make this celebratory release a possibility. No matter the outcome, Marvel’s Wolverine‘s release will not only be an amazing experience for fans when the game finally does release, but as a showcase of the bright future ahead for Logan.
