One of the newest additions to the Marvel Universe has finally revealed the heartbreaking truth behind his turn toward super heroics.
West Coast Avengers #2 finds the eponymous team taking on their latest daring mission, interrupting an arms deal on the high seas. Unfortunately, it isn’t just armed goons that the heroes are up against. Instead, this entire criminal operation is being overseen by none other than the Flag-Smasher himself — Steven “Grant” Rogers. And, while every member of the West Coast Avengers recognizes the villain for who he is, only Blue Bolt ever spent any amount of time worshiping him as a testament to what the world could be.

First seen in the opening story of 2016’s Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 by Nick Spencer, Ángel Unzueta, and Daniel Acuña, the man who would become the most infamous Captain America of all time was born of a twisted version of the Marvel Universe created by the sentient Cosmic Cube known as Kobik. Born Steven Rogers, this version of the character would go on to become the perfect Hydra agent, trained from a young age and molded into exactly the kind of “patriot” that the United States’ eventual overlords were hoping to employ. From within S.H.I.E.L.D., this false Captain America was able to orchestrate a brazen takeover of the entire country, as seen throughout the events of 2015’s Secret Empire.
In the years since his and Hydra’s ultimate defeat, this twisted Steven Rogers has continued playing various roles within other villainous plots. Apart from working alongside the remnants of Hydra, the former Captain America returned to the life of costumed superhero propaganda by taking up the mantle of Captain Krakoa. This was all part of Orchis’ plan to propagate anti-mutant sentiment in the wake of their attack on the mutant island nation of Krakoa. Despite being defeated and unmasked yet again, the villain went on to become a prominent political figure, gleefully taking up the mantle of the Flag Smasher in a bid to showcase his purported love for all humanity, which was only ever a thinly veiled attempt to dehumanize mutants everywhere.

The latest iteration of the West Coast Avengers was founded by Iron Man and War Machine with the express goal of rehabilitating former supervillains. As such, the likes of Ultron and Blue Bolt have found a place for themselves on the team’s roster. While Ultron has gladly taken the opportunity to prove himself as something other than a monster, another version of the iconic villain has continued on with the character’s more usual efforts. Specifically, this other Ultron has been giving those with terminal illnesses a chance to be reborn as part of his ever-expanding army of cybernetic beings, which the villainous Ultron himself interprets as an act of benevolence.
