The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s Ultimate Power Man doesn’t need to escape prison to make a major impact on the entire world.
The Ultimates #9 follows the life of Luke Cage, from the day that he was incarcerated for seemingly no reason at all at the tender age of 15, all the way through to what might be the greatest day of his entire life. Along the way, Luke is lost in his sadness, comes to terms with his situation, and comes into his own as a leader of sorts, all before being given the chance to reclaim the life that was stolen away without him ever knowing it. Thanks to Tony Stark, aka Iron Lad, Luke is given an opportunity to gain the iconic powers he is so well known for wielding, although rather than use them to affect the outside world, he decides to leave his revolutionary mark on the inside of as many prisons as the system is willing to let hold him.

Introduced all the way back in 1972’s Hero for Hire #1 by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska, Luke Cage grew up in Harlem, where he established himself as a steadfast community leader in his adult life after years of committing petty crimes as a kid. Unfortunately, Luke would be incarcerated for crimes he did not commit, landing him in Seagate Penitentiary, where he was subjected to cruel and unusual experiments against his will. Because of these experiments, Luke developed utterly unbreakable skin and astonishing superhuman strength to match, giving him a way to finally escape the prison system he never should have been a part of in the first place.
After returning to Harlem, Luke decided to embark upon a career as a Hero for Hire, quite literally acting as a superpowered guardian or investigator for any and all who could meet his price. In the years that followed, Luke crossed paths and teamed up with a variety of heroes, most prominently Danny Rand, better known as the Iron Fist, with whom he founded the Heroes for Hire as a genuine organization unto itself. Although Luke has maintained his role as a hero, he has shifted into far more altruistic territory, including unseating the former Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk as the Mayor of New York City.

Scarlet Witch Just Found Out Why Black Cat’s More Powerful
Spider-Man’s other greatest love has just revealed how potent her unseen powers are, and why she is totally untouchable to at least one MCU icon.
The Luke Cage of the current iteration of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is just the latest in a long line of heroes to receive their powers later in life than they should have. When the villainous Reed Richards known as the Maker happened across the reality of Earth-6160, he used his knowledge of historical events and various figures’ intimate details to effectively remake the world in his own image. This included preemptively killing or preventing the transformations of various heroes who could pose a threat to his regime. Fortunately for the likes of Luke Cage and Peter Parker, the heroic Tony Stark has taken it upon himself to return those powers to their rightful owners, or at least present them with the knowledge that such lives exist in the first place.
