The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s new Ultimate Doctor Doom has just revealed his biggest regret, and what he intends to do about it.

After missing out on yet another mission, Doom finds himself on the receiving end of some harsh criticism from his young compatriot, Tony Stark. As seen in the pages of The Ultimates #4, Doom hasn’t just been sitting idly on the sidelines. He’s been hard at work studying both the past he knows and the one that was stolen from him by the villainous Reed Richards known as The Maker. Beyond that, Doom has also been tirelessly trying to recreate the incident that should have led to the stunning debut of the Fantastic Four, and he won’t rest until he gets it right.

Introduced back in the pages of 1961’s Fantastic Four #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the eponymous team consisting of Reed Richards, Susan and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm have been some of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe from the beginning. During a cosmic expedition, the quartet was exposed to powerful cosmic rays that altered the explorers on a molecular level. This gave rise to the Fantastic Four as they are known today, with nearly every iteration of the team across the Multiverse sharing that same origin story.

Tragically, the current Ultimate Universe, the reality of Earth-6160, has been devoid of its Fantastic Four just as it is so many of its other iconic heroes. Discovered by The Maker in Ultimate Invasion #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch, this reality was nearly identical to the original Ultimate Universe from which The Maker hailed. Through his near-limitless resources and knowledge of historical events, The Maker was able to effectively rewrite history as he saw fit, preventing most of the world’s heroes from ever coming into form while ensuring the rest did his bidding.

Daredevil Just Gave Up His Newest Calling In Order to Return to His Roots

Matt Murdock just rededicated himself to being Daredevil by giving up the other life he has spent so much effort building for himself.

It wasn’t until the Ultimate Doom, the Reed Richards of Earth-6160, joined forces with Howard Stark that anyone stood a chance of unseating The Maker from his self-appointed role as the ruler of their world. The battle that ensued trapped The Maker within a swathe of New York City that is now untouchable, if only for the next year or so. As such, the likes of Doom and Tony Stark have formed their own team of Ultimates who intend to set right the course of history as best they can—and defeat The Maker once and for all upon his inevitable return.
