The following contains major spoilers for X-Men #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s most important teams of X-Men have finally found the one thing they cannot abide, and it means war.

X-Men #9 picks up in the middle of the battle at Greymalkin Prison, formerly the Xavier Institute. There, the heroes of the X-Men have come looking for one of their own, specifically Beast, who was stolen away only recently. Greymalkin Prison also just so happens to be where Rogue’s Uncanny X-Men are launching an attack to take back their old home. Unfortunately, no matter how much the two teams have in common, their opinions on what to do about Charles Xavier couldn’t be more different, nor could they be a better reason for some classic X-Men infighting.

Introduced all the way back in 1963’s X-Men #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Professor Charles Xavier was the original founder of the eponymous team. After years of trying to figure out how best to help mutantkind and humanity bridge the gap between them, Xavier founded his own school and sought out young mutants in need to fill its hallowed halls. With a mission of peace and prosperity for all, Xavier did everything he could to help his students become the heroes he knew they were meant to be, albeit not without some truly astonishing controversies along the way.

One of the most controversial moments of Xavier’s career came during the height of mutantkind’s war against the anti-mutant organization known as Orchis. In a bid to win favor with Orchis’ artificially intelligent leadership, Xavier carried out a brutal attack against the space frigate known as the Agnew. This prevented the destruction of Nimrod’s Sentinel City, all at the expense of the lives of dozens of otherwise innocent humans who were aboard the ship when it detonated its own nuclear payload.

An X-Men Icon Still Can’t Leave Behind Her Dark Krakoan Era Legacy

One of the greatest mutant heroes of all time has just revealed exactly how much damage the war against Orchis truly dealt.

Since the end of the Krakoan Era, Xavier has apparently been held as an inmate within the walls of Greymalkin Prison. All the while, both the primary X-Men and the Uncanny X-Men have embarked upon their own efforts to see Charles’ dream continue on, largely by providing a safe haven for young mutants in need. Unfortunately, neither have been able to ignore the threat that Doctor Ellis’ Greymalkin Prison poses, especially not when it is the source of numerous villains that have gone on to hunt and terrorize others simply for the crime of being born as they are.
