The future of Marvel’s Strange Academy will likely be dependent on what the studio decides to do with Doctor Strange 3.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Marvel Studios had decided to no longer prioritize a Strange Academy television series. While the show was never formally announced, rumors of a potential show based on the Marvel Comic created by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos have been circling for some time.

“Sources stressed to Deadline that these projects were never officially greenlit, and may still come to fruition at some point,” Deadline reported. “The studio has simply shifted its priorities at the moment.”

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Marvel likely won’t circle back around to Strange Academy until they “have a better idea of what Doctor Strange 3 will be, and when it will arrive.”

The studio will also likely wait until for Benedict Wong, who plays Wong in the MCU, to “finish up” Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. Wong plays Clarence “Da” Shi in that show, which premiered in March 2024 and has been renewed for both a second and third season.

Sneider also reported, “I had heard that Marvel had opened up a writer’s room for that series, which was designed to counter HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, as it, too, would’ve focused on a school for young wizards and warlocks, etc.”

Marvel Studios hasn’t actually made any official announcement as to whether or not Doctor Strange 3 is happening, though rumors regarding that potential project have also been circulating online.

Whether or not Strange Academy ends up happening remains to be seen. Whether or not Benedict Cumberbatch would potentially star in the show remains unclear at this time.

Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, meanwhile, are both currently streaming on Disney+.
