The following contains major spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #28, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Miles Morales has just discovered the literal god that has been staring over his shoulder for years — and it’s a major problem.
After joining the Black Panther for a trip to Wakanda in the hopes of finding a cure for his vampiric condition, the titular hero of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #28 finds himself standing face-to-face with none other than the Panther God herself — Bast. Unfortunately, Bast is anything but pleased to see Spider-Man standing in her midst, especially since he has brought an immortal interloper along with him. As it turns out, Miles has served as a herald for the immortal trickster Anansi unwittingly for longer than anyone knows, all without ever realizing it for himself.

The patron deity of the Black Panther, Bast is a member of the pantheon of gods known as the Ennead, who were first glimpsed in Werner Roth’s “The Terror That Creeps,” from 1950’s Marvel Tales #96. Although their initial appearance in the pages of Marvel Comics came only in the form of a vision, the Ennead have become more and more prominent in the years since. This is particularly true thanks to characters such as T’Challa and Marc Spector, better known as Moon Knight, whose powers are directly connected to gods like Bast and Khonshu.
Bast herself was introduced in the form of an ancient totem in the pages of 1966’s Fantastic Four #52 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The daughter of Ra, Bast is one of the eldest of her immortal siblings, having been worshiped on Earth for more than 10,000 years. Although Bast was born of the Ennead, her prominence in Wakanda has also lent her to the pantheon known as the Orisha, a place she shares with her fellow gods Toth, Kokou, Mujaji, Ptah, and Nyami. When T’Challa was subjected to the curse of the vampire during Marvel’s Blood Hunt, it was Bast who provided him with the cure for his ailment in the form of the fabled heart-shaped herb of Wakanda.

Although the Trickster God known as Kwaku Anansi had been seen in the pages of Marvel Comics decades prior, he wouldn’t be given a proper introduction until 2002’s Amazing Spider-Man #48 by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. This debut and subsequent appearances have established Anansi’s role as the “first” Spider-Man, who stands as the often unseen patron deity of all Spider-Totems across the Multiverse and the overseer of the Web of Life and Destiny. Since his first appearance, Anansi has played a key role in numerous storylines, even if he is usually keen to avoid any direct conflict for himself.

Spider-Man
Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.
Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
