I’m liking what Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, continues to say about the Nova series that is in development for Disney+.

While promoting the upcoming release of Agatha All Along, Winderbaum gives an update on Nova, which will feature Richard Rider.

Winderbaum actually says Nova isn’t a done deal and even that all the Marvel TV projects aren’t a sure bet. He says they’ll only go foward if they think they have it right.

“We love Nova”

“So, Nova’s in development right now, Winderbaum told the Phase Zero podcast on YouTube.” We are developing more than we make; this is part of the new Marvel. We should talk about this because, at Marvel, everything has a spotlight on it, and everyone gets super excited. We love Nova, and we want to get it right. It’s in development, but we’re not going to go on a show until we are happy with a pilot and a bible.”

It’s brought up that Richard Rider Nova is a cosmic character, and that cosmic hasn’t really been on Disney Plus. Winderbaum points to what Star Trek has done, particularly with mention of Terry Matalas, the showrunner behind the well-received Star Trek: Picard Season 3.

“I’ve been really inspired by what Trek has been doing over the last few years. Their shows are incredible, which is why we hired Terry to do Vision Quest with us,” he said.

Inspired by the comics

Winderbaum also name drops Battlestar Galactica, another good show that aired back in 2004 to 2009.

“The Nova being developed right now is an amazing ensemble piece. It’s got shades of Trek, shades of Battlestar, but also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated Richard Rider’s world can get, and it certainly embraces it,” said Winderbaum.

Regarding the comics, with mention of Star Trek and BSG, it’s likely Winderbaum is referring to Annihilation and the 2007 Nova comics from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, the duo who inspired the MCU’s multi-billion dollar Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

If Winderbaum reads this article, my advice to him is to NOT adapt anything that came after the cancellation of DnA’s Marvel Cosmic. Don’t adapt anything that has been released in the last 10-12 years (applies to all of Marvel Comics). Don’t use NINO Sam Alexander. Don’t do a bait-and-switch.

Fans aren’t all happy with Disney’s live-action version.
