The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s new Ultimate Wolverine just recreated one of the most astonishing moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ultimate Wolverine #1 opens to the sight of a lone cargo plane flying not that high above Latveria. As it passes through the night sky, a pair of soldiers discuss the superpowered agent sitting across from them. As far as they know, the Winter Soldier is an unstoppable, unkillable force of nature unto himself, and while they haven’t seen what he can do firsthand, watching him leap from the plane with no parachute in sight gives them a good idea of just how capable he truly is.

This particular moment is a not-so-subtle callback to a near-identical scene from 2014’s Captain America; The Winter Soldier. The scene in question sees Chris Evans’ Captain America flying over a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship that has been taken captive by pirates led by Batroc the Leaper, as portrayed by Georges St-Pierre. When the target finally comes within reach, the titular hero casually leaps from the back of the plane without a parachute, simply letting gravity and his superhuman physique take care of the fall into the ocean for him.
The current Ultimate Wolverine was first seen in the pages of 2024’s Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 by Deniz Camp and Jonas Scharf. Much like the primary version of the character, this Wolverine is a mutant with an impossibly powerful healing factor who formerly fought alongside the likes of Kurt Wagner and Raven Darkholme as part of the resistance force known as the Opposition. Tragically, this version of the character would ultimately fall into the hands of the ominous Directorate X, who wiped his memories before grafting Adamantium to his bones and remaking him into their own Winter Soldier.

Since his transformation into the Winter Soldier, the Ultimate Wolverine has served dutifully under the watch of the leaders of the Eurasion Republic – Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. Like many other iconic Marvel heroes and villains, these three have been reimagined as members of the Maker’s Council, a group of world leaders who purportedly act with independence, all as part of an elaborate ploy to keep the world at large from rising up against the Maker’s reign. Though the Maker himself is currently unable to push back against the likes of the Ultimates who now stand against him, the members of his Council have taken it upon themselves to deal some truly devastating blows to their world’s would-be heroes.

Wolverine
Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.
Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
